Job description

Job Description

There’s no pledge more important than the one we make to look after our environment, and we’re committed to helping you do exactly that. Join us as we strive to ensure a sustainable future for our communities and the world we live in.

Become part of our global network of skilled engineers, scientists, auditors, planners and environmental specialists, all working together to leave this world better than we found it.

Who are we looking for?

Our Waste Management team is looking for a Waste Management Engineering Graduate to join our team in Edmonton, Calgary, or Vancouver. You will support municipal, industrial, and private-sector clients on projects involving solid waste planning, landfill and transfer‑station engineering, waste diversion and resource recovery, organics and recycling facilities, environmental monitoring, and the assessment and improvement of waste management systems. Working alongside experienced engineers, scientists, and technologists, you will contribute to practical and sustainable solutions while building your technical and consulting skills.

Be part of our dynamic culture!

This position may be based in Edmonton, Calgary, or Vancouver and supports a hybrid work model that combines in‑office collaboration, field activities, and flexibility. We work together to balance project needs and individual circumstances.

Working with a collaborative and technically strong team that supports learning and professional growth, this position offers varied assignments and will see you involved in:
  • Support planning, design, and assessment assignments for landfills, transfer stations, recycling and organics facilities, and other solid waste infrastructure.
  • Assist with engineering calculations, data analysis, drawings, specifications, quantity take‑offs, cost estimates, technical memoranda, reports, and permit or approval documentation under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Participate in field programs such as landfill inspections, construction observation, waste characterization studies, groundwater and surface‑water sampling, leachate sampling, landfill‑gas monitoring, surveying, and environmental compliance monitoring.
  • Organize, interpret, and quality‑check field and operational data related to waste quantities, diversion performance, landfill capacity, leachate, gas, and environmental monitoring.
  • Support preliminary and detailed design activities, which may include grading, drainage, earthworks, leachate management, landfill‑gas systems, access roads, and facility layout.
  • Assist with waste management plans, feasibility studies, options evaluations, environmental assessments, and strategies for waste reduction, diversion, recycling, organics management, and resource recovery.
  • Coordinate project tasks with engineers, scientists, technologists, planners, contractors, laboratories, and clients, and help track schedules, budgets, deliverables, and action items.
  • Support construction administration by reviewing field information, documenting site activities, attending progress meetings, and assisting with responses to contractor questions.
  • Apply GHD health, safety, quality, and environmental procedures during office and field assignments, and contribute to a positive safety culture.
What you will bring to the team:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, Geological, or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Recent graduate with 0–2 years of relevant experience; co‑op, internship, research, field, construction, laboratory, or consulting experience related to waste management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, or civil infrastructure is an asset.
  • Eligibility to register as an Engineer‑in‑Training with APEGA in Alberta or Engineers and Geoscientists BC, depending on the successful candidate’s work location.
  • Interest in solid waste management, landfill engineering, resource recovery, waste diversion, environmental monitoring, and sustainable infrastructure.
  • Foundational understanding of environmental and civil engineering principles, with an interest in developing skills in earthworks, grading, drainage, leachate management, landfill gas, and waste facility operations.
  • Ability to analyze information, complete calculations, maintain accurate records, and prepare clear technical documentation with strong attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, data‑management tools, or engineering analysis software is an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Effective organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and seek guidance when needed.
  • A proactive, adaptable, and safety‑focused approach, with a willingness to learn and take on a range of office and field responsibilities.
  • A valid driver’s licence and a driving record acceptable to GHD; an MVR check will be completed before hire.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites throughout Western Canada and undertake field work that may involve remote locations, active waste facilities, variable weather, extended days, and occasional overnight stays. Reasonable accommodations are available, and project teams plan field schedules to support health, safety, and wellbeing.
