Job summary

Scotiabank in Toronto is seeking an Intermediate Java Developer to join the Global Payments Engineering team. You will design, develop, and maintain backend services with Java and Spring Boot, and collaborate with QA and product teams to deliver reliable solutions.

You'll work on Kafka-based messaging, relational databases, RESTful APIs, and participate in code reviews in an Agile environment, with opportunities to learn and grow within a leading financial tech group.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of Java development experience.
• Proficient in Java 8+ and Spring Boot.
• Experience with Kafka-based messaging and event-driven designs.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
• Implement and support Kafka-based messaging and event-driven integrations.
• Work with relational databases, including schema design, queries, and performance optimization.
• Build and consume RESTful APIs.
• Collaborate with team members to deliver features and improvements.
• Participate in code reviews and follow best practices for clean, maintainable code.
• Troubleshoot and resolve application bugs and performance issues.
• Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing.

Purpose

You will work closely with senior developers, QA, and product teams to deliver reliable, scalable solutions.

What You'll Bring:

• 5+ years of professional experiencein Java application development
• Strong working knowledge ofJava (8+) and Spring Boot
• Experience withApache Kafka(producing and consuming messages, basic event-driven workflows)
• Solid understanding ofrelational databases(e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server)
• Proficiency in SQL and database querying
• Experience with REST APIs and backend service development
• Familiarity with Git and standard build tools such as Maven or Gradle
• Experience working effectively in a collaborative Agile team environment
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to manage tasks independently and meet delivery timelines
• Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and continuously improve technical skills

Nice-to-Have (Optional)

• Experience with microservices-based architectures
• Exposure to CI/CD pipelines
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
• Experience with Docker or containerized applications

Working Conditions

Work in standard office-based environments located in Scarborough and Downtown Toronto; non-standard hours are a common occurrence. No external travel required.
