Apera is seeking a Senior Software Developer in Test (SDET) to own test automation across production software, APIs, and distributed systems. This remote role offers exposure to the CTO and a chance to shape quality engineering as the first SDET hire in North America.

You'll build automation frameworks, define testing strategy, improve coverage, and solve complex quality challenges in a fast-moving seed-stage AI startup.

Senior Software Developer In Test | Remote

We're recruiting a Senior SDET for a seed-stage AI startup building technology for autonomous industrial operations. Backed by leading venture capital investors, the company is bringing AI into complex, real-world environments across manufacturing, logistics and infrastructure.

This is an opportunity to join a growing engineering team as its first SDET hire in the U.S with direct access to senior leadership and the chance to shape how quality engineering evolves as the business scales.

The role

You'll take ownership of test automation and quality engineering end to end, building reliable frameworks, defining testing strategy, improving coverage, and ensuring quality across production software, APIs, distributed systems and customer deployments.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You'll work closely with the CTO and build the processes and tooling needed to scale quality as the product and customer base grow. The focus is on building, coding and solving problems, rather than simply managing a team or maintaining existing test suites.

What we're looking for

• Strong Python skills and experience building automation frameworks from the ground up.
• A track record of testing complex, production-grade software and distributed systems.
• Ownership mentality, with the ability to define testing approaches, prioritise quality issues and work independently in a fast-moving environment.
• Strong technical communication skills and experience collaborating across teams.
• Exposure to AI/LLM testing, agentic workflows or evaluation frameworks is a plus, but not essential.
