About Us

Equilibrium is a multidisciplinary firm specializing in the reduction of contaminated site environmental liability through a more thorough understanding of human health and ecological risks and the application of standard and non-standard remediation and reclamation techniques. We provide support to various clients throughout Western Canada and internationally in areas of: risk assessment and risk management, Phase 1, 2, and 3 investigations, standard remediation and reclamation approaches, as well as advanced remediation technology implementation. We are also actively engaged in research activities, funded by industries and provincial/federal governments, to better understand relationships between substances encountered in the environment and associated adverse effects on human and ecological health. Equilibrium has spearheaded numerous innovative regulatory guideline updates and tools, including creating the Subsoil Salinity Tool (SST) which provides a standardized approach for assessing and remediating salt contamination.

Position Summary

The position is based at the head office in Calgary, AB, and involves a primary focus on software development of internal and external facing software tools relating to environmental science. The successful candidate will also assist with field programs soil and groundwater investigations as well as remediation programs. This role combines environmental science expertise with software development skills to support our multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in the Equilibrium safety program.
  • Work successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team for both field and office-based programs.
  • Assist with software development projects, including writing, testing, and debugging code using .NET, python and react programming languages.
  • Provide technical support to employees and customers, including troubleshooting hardware and software issues and answering technical questions.
  • Collaborate with other team members to identify and solve technical problems.
  • Develop documentation throughout development life cycles.
  • Stay up to date with emerging trends and technologies in software development and IT support.
  • Support field programs including Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 Environmental Site Assessments, groundwater, surface water, soil vapor, and wetland biota studies.
  • Liaise with field staff and project managers during field programs.
  • Compile environmental data into tables and figures for reports.
  • Conduct analytical data validation and Quality Assurance/Quality Control.
  • Support in laboratory experiments.
  • Assist in writing technical reports with support including Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 Environmental Site Assessments, applying relevant Alberta (or Saskatchewan) Tier 1 and Tier 2 regulatory soil and groundwater guidelines, assessing exceedances.
  • Learn and apply risk-based remediation guidelines and target remediation strategies to meet risk-based remediation closure.
Qualifications
  • 0 to 3 years of experience in environmental investigation and remediation programs.
  • University degree or technical diploma in environmental science, soil science, engineering, hydrogeology, agrology, toxicology, or related fields is considered an asset.
  • Formal education in software development.
  • Solid understanding of programming languages, such as C#, python, react and HTML5/CSS3.
  • Competency in macro programming and Excel formulas
  • Experience with SQL queries, stored procedures, and database management.
  • Familiarity with software development tools, such as Visual Studio, VS Code, and Git.
  • Knowledge of IT support, including troubleshooting hardware and software issues and maintaining IT infrastructure.
  • Eligibility for membership as a Professional Agrologist, Registered Technologist in Agrology, Professional Engineer, Professional Geologist or Hydrogeologist, Professional Biologist, or Environmental Professional.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, excellent communication skills, and eager to learn and be challenged.
