Job Summary

The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030.

Highlights of the two-phase redevelopment project include:

  • Expanded Emergency Department with additional treatment spaces
  • New health care pavilion with 83 beds to support maternity, neonatal intensive care, medicine, and mental health patients
  • New operating rooms, procedure rooms and recovery spaces
  • New acute care tower with 160 beds
  • New medical imaging department
  • New integrated BC Cancer Centre

Burnaby Hospital plays an essential role to those living in the community by delivering a variety health care services. Services and specialties include emergency medicine, intermediate-level critical care, medical imaging, internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, geriatric medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, palliative, psychiatry, oncology, outpatient clinics, and an extensive surgery program with anesthesia, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, and plastics specialties.

We are currently looking to fill a Part-Time opportunity for a Social Worker to join the Oncology Clinic Unit at Burnaby Hospital located in Burnaby, B.C.

Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Services, provides assessment and treatment services for cancer patients. Liaises with home health units, community agencies, and caregiver support groups. Participates in educational inservices, planning, program development, and policy recommendations. Provides consultation support and the social work perspective to the interdisciplinary team in the development of services within the assigned area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts social and psychosocial assessments of clients and families and interprets the information using a variety of modalities in accordance with professional standards and clinical practice.
  • Provides counselling to cancer patients and their families during the initial crisis of diagnosis, recurrent treatment, and remission. Liaises with the Palliative Care Team as needed.
  • Provides therapeutic services such as relaxation/meditation services to cancer patients and their families.
  • Follows up and provides ongoing monitoring of complex psychosocial situations. Evaluates clients'' response to interventions.
  • Provides information regarding clients' psychosocial situation and participates in developing a comprehensive plan of care with/for the client, as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Collaborates and consults with other community professionals.
  • Participates in team meetings and case conferences relative to the client care needs.
  • Acts as a resource for clients and their families by providing information regarding community resources and access to these resources, facilitating referrals where appropriate, and facilitating the development of community resources by identifying services needed to support the health of families.
  • Promotes client/family autonomy by ensuring their participation in planning and decision making and the development of problem solving abilities.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities by providing input into the development, implementation, and evaluation of program goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Assists in the development and provision of relevant educational programs for Fraser Health staff, clients, their families, and community agencies on psychosocial issues related to illness, disability, grieving, and loss.
  • Prepares statistics in accordance with the workload measurement system for submission to designated personnel. Maintains written clinical records.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Master's degree in Social Work from an approved School of Social Work, plus two (2) years' recent related clinical experience. Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of counselling skills and clinical practice models as it relates to individuals, families, and groups.
  • Demonstrated specialized expert knowledge in the field of cancer care.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct social and psychosocial assessments.
  • Ability to provide leadership to the interdisciplinary team in care planning in complex client situations.
  • Ability to work effectively with others including in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team and understand the scope of practice of other health care disciplines.
  • Ability to make effective referrals, reflecting in-depth knowledge of community resources and strong collaborative skills in working with other community agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with clients, families, other members of the health care team, and community agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with conflict.
  • Ability to facilitate group meetings.
