Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, performs professional social work of advanced complexity. Assists in resolving complex psychosocial problems. Carries out a variety of casework and counselling methods; consults extensively with hospital staff and community agencies regarding the psychosocial aspects of the patient's situation and participates in the training of Social Work students.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training And Experience

Masters of Social Work degree (M.S.W.) from an accredited school of Social Work required. Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers. Related social work experience, preferably in a medical setting, and demonstrated clinical competence.

This masters degree of Social Work Casual position will provide casual relief to the Royal Jubilee, Victoria General, Saanich Peninsula and Gorge Road Hospitals. Clinical areas will range from the Emergency Department, Cardiac Care, Adult and Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Alternate Level of Care, Rehabilitation, General Medical, Surgical , Neurosciences, and Out-Patient Clinics. Previous experience working in acute care will be an asset.Social workers work in team-based care and are dealing with clients and their families experiencing a trauma, are in crisis, dealing with grief and sudden and unexpected loss, and traumatic change in health condition. Social workers provide short-term supportive counselling, refer clients to various community and government resources and prioritize complex discharge planning to return clients to their home or alternate level of care.All social workers are Designated Responders under the Adult Guardianship Act and must investigate, assess, and intervene in all allegations of Adult abuse, neglect and self-neglect. Social workers collaborate with the Ministry of Children and Families on all matters related to child protection.Social workers must be registered with the British Columbia College of Social workers to practice in hospitals.
