Position Overview

Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, Patient and Family Counselling, the Counsellor provides psychosocial support to cancer patients and their families. The role involves clinical case work supervision and consultation regarding psychosocial aspects of cancer management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Screen, assess, and counsel patients and families on emotional and practical needs related to their diagnosis, including complex issues; develop group programs for patient and family support.
  • Offer consultation to interdisciplinary team members and collaborate effectively within the team.
  • Coordinate with community agencies, identify patient needs for services, and facilitate appropriate referrals or alternative support strategies.
  • Contribute to educational activities within the Centre, provincial programs, and outreach initiatives.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and provide clinical guidance to students and volunteers as needed.
  • Engage in research projects as directed.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counselling Psychology, or Clinical Psychology from a recognized program.
  • At least two years of recent experience in an interdisciplinary healthcare or oncology setting, including work with individuals, couples, families, and groups, as well as program development and grief counseling.
  • Proficiency in evidence-based therapy models such as CBT, Systems Theory, Solution-Focused Therapy, and others.
  • Registration eligibility with the appropriate professional regulatory body.
  • Deep understanding of the impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples, with a commitment to anti-racism and cultural safety in healthcare.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and commitments, including TRC Calls to Action, UNDRIP, BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, and related documents.

  • Effective communication skills, sensitivity, and professionalism in interactions.

Benefits and Employment Details
