Social Worker/Counsellor - Patient and Family Counselling Cancer Care

BC Cancer
Vancouver, BC

Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, Patient and Family Counselling, the Counsellor provides psychosocial support to cancer patients and their families. Receives day-to-day consultation and clinical case work supervision regarding psychosocial aspects of cancer management.

What you'll do
  1. Screen, assess, and counsel patients and families concerning emotional and practical needs related to their diagnosis; help with complex problems; develop group programs for patients and families.
  2. Provide consultation to other disciplines and collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  3. Act as liaison with community agencies, identify patient needs for services, make appropriate referrals, or develop support, education, and follow-up strategies.
  4. Participate in planning and developing educational activities within the Centre, provincial networks, and outreach programs.
  5. Contribute to the department's quality improvement initiatives.
  6. Provide clinical guidance to students and volunteers as needed.
  7. Support and promote research projects as directed.
What you bring

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counselling Psychology, or Clinical Psychology from a recognized program.
  • At least two years of recent experience in an interdisciplinary health care or oncology setting, including work with individuals, couples, families, and groups; program and community development; adjustment and grief counseling.
  • Experience with evidence-based therapy models such as CBT, Systems Theory, Solution-Focused Therapy, Supportive Therapy, Crisis Counseling, Group Therapy, and Resource Counseling.
  • Eligible for registration with the relevant professional regulatory body.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples, with a commitment to anti-racism, cultural safety, and health equity.
  • Understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments related to Indigenous rights, anti-racism, and health equity, including TRC, In Plain Sight, BC's Declaration Act, UNDRIP, and related documents.
Core Competencies
  • Deep understanding of Indigenous-specific and systemic racism, with demonstrated leadership in creating inclusive environments and embedding Indigenous cultural safety and humility into practice.
  • Knowledge of social determinants of health and the impact of colonialism on Indigenous and equity-deserving groups.
