Job summary

The City of Edmonton is seeking engaged bylaw enforcement professionals to uphold Community Standards and Traffic bylaws, including snow and ice enforcement. You’ll investigate, educate residents and businesses, respond to a high volume of complaints, and prepare cases for court in a respectful, service-minded environment.

The role emphasizes equity, diversity and inclusion, strong communication, and coordination with partners while working in varying weather and shift conditions.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized 2 year Diploma related to Police Studies, Security, Criminology, or a related diploma is required
  • A minimum 1 year of strong customer service experience including some experience in diverse bylaw and/or law enforcement experience

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations and enforce the Community Standards bylaw and Traffic bylaw as it relates to snow and ice enforcement
  • Generate compliance and cooperation by educating the public through the explanation of bylaws, policies and procedures
  • Respond to and process a high volume of complaints
  • Liaise with internal and external partners
  • Conduct investigations to verify and satisfy appropriate legislative and regulatory provisions
  • Collect and transport evidence
  • Determine appropriate enforcement actions and issue: written or verbal warnings, violation or specified penalty tickets, and snow removal orders
  • Prepare files and court briefs; provide evidence in court as required

What will you do?

Skills required for Success:
  • Ability to pass internal training program which includes Officer Safety tactics
  • Knowledge of investigative techniques, bylaws, enforcement powers and authority, court proceedings, and rules of evidence
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, professionalism, and diplomacy in dealing with the public
  • Effective in-person conflict resolution and investigative skills; ability to deal effectively with sensitive issues on a continuous basis is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of racism and discrimination as it pertains to enforcement, and how bias can influence behaviour and decisions
  • Must be professional and respectful during confrontational and hostile situations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking, report writing, letter composition, stakeholder agency presentations, presentation preparation, and court presentations
  • Ability to manage a high volume workload, effectively organize, prioritize and re-prioritize work
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Google Document, Google Sheet, Google Slides),, Microsoft Office and enforcement database systems

Conditions of Employment:
  • Valid current intermediate First Aid, CPR and AED certificates
  • Hire is dependent upon a Criminal Record Check that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Use of a personal vehicle is required. Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business
  • Applicants may be tested
Work Environment:
  • Able to work under various weather conditions and in a safe manner
  • You will be required to work various shifts - weekends and holidays included
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Salary: $28.647 - $35.922 (Hourly)
