As an Equipment Operator III in Infrastructure Maintenance and Operations, you will play a vital role in keeping Edmonton’s roads, parks, and public spaces safe and well-maintained year-round. Operating heavy machinery such as Graders, Street Sweepers, and Loaders, you will directly support our city's infrastructure needs. Beyond operating equipment, you will step in with truck driving, litter control, and general labour tasks to support your team whenever operational needs shift. You will carry out all duties in alignment with our Occupational Health and Safety and Enviso Environmental programs. What will you do?

• Skillfully and safely operate assigned heavy equipment (including Graders, Street Sweepers, and Loaders) and their attachments to complete maintenance and task-driven requests
• Perform mandatory pre-trip inspections, daily equipment check sheets, and routine maintenance, reporting any mechanical defects or issues promptly
• Conduct Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs) for every location and task to prioritize safety on the job site
• Adapt to changing operational needs by performing general labour, truck driving, litter collection, and site maintenance when equipment operation is not actively required
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, crew members, and engagement participants to address site needs, report property damage, and respond to public inquiries respectfully
• Follow all City safety standards, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and environmental regulations

Qualifications

• Successful completion of at least the tenth (10th) school grade
• Minimum of 2 years of operation of equipment assigned to the position or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Skills required for success

• Ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner
• Take pride in the longevity of City assets by ensuring all assigned machinery is kept in peak operating condition
• Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, maintenance and repair
• Understand legal provincial requirements & Fleet Safety requirements regarding commercial vehicle operation, heavy equipment operating, equipment hauling and towing procedures
• Knowledge of the PARS Operating Procedures and SOP’s
• Knowledge of city truck routes and manufacturer procedures for properly operating equipment
• Optimize routes and material usage to ensure paving projects are completed within specified timelines and quality standards
• Performing a detailed pre-trip inspection on equipment at the beginning of every shift or in case of swapping units, and a post walk around after each shift
• Commitment to fostering a robust reporting culture for incidents or near-misses, with proven expertise in running field-level risk assessments (FLRAs) and maintaining strict alignment with OH&S and environmental compliance programs
• Basic computer skills (email, google applications, and data entry)

Conditions of Employment

• Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake Endorsement (Q) or higher
• Maintaining a City Driver's permit (D Permit) is a requirement of this position
• Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
• Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
• Possession of current Emergency First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
• Applicants may be tested

Work Environment

• The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
• This role works primarily in an outdoor setting
• Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, poor air quality, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
• This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
• Shift requirements
• The position involves a variety of shift work and shift rotations:
  • Ability to work a 12 hr per day rotating day and nights shifts in the winter season
  • Ability to work a 10 hr shift in the summer season, night rotation may be required
  • Weekend and night work is mandatory
