What Is the Opportunity?

The New Nuclear Development team provides estimating, technical expertise, construction leadership, relationship management, and project management support during the early stages of new nuclear projects. These projects include both Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and large-scale (gigawatt-class) nuclear facilities.

This role will support a variety of activities, including estimating, technology assessments, constructability reviews, schedule development, contract strategy and development, logistics planning, site planning, and other services typically required by clients during the early phases of nuclear project development. Some assignments may be executed through joint ventures or strategic partnerships with other organizations. Current opportunities are located across North America (Canada and the United States) and Europe.

Aecon's construction expertise and leadership during the development phase are critical to the successful delivery of new nuclear projects. The New Nuclear Development team advances projects from pre-conceptual design through the Final Investment Decision (FID) and validation phases. Upon project approval, projects are typically transitioned to execution teams with continued support from New Nuclear Development as required.

The successful candidate will report to the Technical Director, New Nuclear Development, and will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities.

  • Lead and contribute to multidisciplinary teams consisting of project controls, operations, finance, estimating, engineering, and other functional groups.

  • Manage relationships with clients, partners, and stakeholders to maintain positive working relationships, resolve issues effectively, and achieve project objectives while fostering long‑term partnerships.
  • Collaborate with partners across multiple organizations to achieve common goals by leveraging diverse expertise, capabilities, and resources.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all interactions.
  • Prepare and deliver high-quality presentations, reports, and communications with confidence, credibility, and technical expertise.
  • Travel to client and partner locations as required to support meetings, presentations, relationship development, team‑building activities, and project‑related work.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (B.Eng., BASc, or equivalent), or an equivalent combination of technical, construction, and/or skilled trade experience.
  • 15+ years of experience planning and managing major capital projects, preferably within the nuclear industry or other highly regulated sectors.
  • Ability to quickly understand reactor technologies and the key drivers of project capital costs, including execution schedules, specialized equipment, material requirements, and construction methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of Nuclear Safety Culture and Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) principles, with experience working in highly regulated construction environments, preferably commercial nuclear power projects.
  • Demonstrated project management, contract management, and risk management experience.
  • Strong understanding of Quality Assurance (QA) Programs and their importance within the nuclear industry.
  • Technical knowledge of nuclear plant designs, systems, reactor fundamentals, materials, and construction methods.
  • Extensive experience in the nuclear industry, including a thorough understanding of owner and contractor requirements, expectations, and project delivery approaches.
