Job summary

Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology is seeking a Licensed Electrician to support internal customers across campus facilities. The position reports to the Facilities Manager and covers installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and inspection of electrical systems including lighting, fire alarm, emergency power, and BAS.

Required qualifications include a valid 309A/442A certificate and at least 3 years of post-licensing experience, with strong knowledge of codes and safety

Qualifications

• Trade certification or equivalent from the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
• Certificate of Qualification as a Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A) or Industrial Electrician (442A).
• Minimum three years of experience following certification as a licensed electrician; HVAC knowledge in commercial/institutional/industrial facilities.
• Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), electrical distribution, fire alarm, emergency power systems; ability to read blueprints and manuals.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Licensed Electrician supports internal customers by performing a variety of tasks related to the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and inspection of Seneca’s electrical systems and equipment across all campuses. This includes electrical distribution systems, lighting, fire alarm systems, emergency power systems, building automation controls, and associated building equipment. The Licensed Electrician ensures all work is completed in accordance with applicable legislation, codes, and safety standards while supporting the ongoing operation of campus facilities.

Responsibilities

Electrical Systems and Equipment

• Installs, services, and repairs electrical systems and equipment including electrical distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, panels, circuit breakers, motors, controls, interior and exterior lighting systems, and emergency lighting.
• Performs diagnostics, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation work on electrical building systems and equipment.
• Conducts inspections and preventative maintenance activities on electrical systems and equipment to support safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
• Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical wiring, fixtures, and devices in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

Fire Alarm Systems, Building Automation Systems and Associated Equipment

• Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, and maintains fire alarm systems and emergency power systems.
• Supports the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and electrical components associated with HVAC and other building systems.
• Monitors electrical building systems and implements corrective actions as required to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Other Duties

• Oversees inventory control including ordering parts and maintaining inventory records.
• Coordinates contracted trades as occasionally required.
• Maintains accurate maintenance, inspection, and service records.
• Responds to emergency service calls and electrical system failures as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned, including minor duties of other trades where certification is not required and work remains within the scope of the position's required qualifications.

Qualifications

Education

• Trade certification or equivalent from the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
• Certificate of Qualification as a Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A) or Industrial Electrician (442A).

Experience

• 3 years' experience following electrical licensing is required.
• Minimum three (3) years of experience following certification as a licensed electrician. Demonstrated knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems as applied in commercial, institutional, or industrial facilities.
• Experience working with building automation systems (BAS), electrical distribution systems, fire alarm systems, emergency power systems, and electronically controlled building equipment.
• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), Microsoft Office applications, and other maintenance software.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders, technical manuals, blueprints, specifications,
• Strong interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with students, staff, contractors, consultants, and external service providers in a diverse environment.
• Thorough knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, standards, and codes, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, and institutional policies and procedures.
