Job summary

College of New Caledonia is seeking an experienced electrician to support the Facilities Services Department. The role covers electrical installation, maintenance, and grounds work, collaborating with staff and management to deliver reliable campus services.

You will install and troubleshoot electrical systems, maintain fire alarm circuits, and support HVAC, CCTV, intruder alarms and data wiring. Strong safety culture and code knowledge are essential.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• ITA Red Seal Electrician Trade Qualification.
• BCSA Electrical Class B Field Safety Representative Certificate.
• Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification.
• WHMIS certification.
• Minimum 5 years in institutional buildings maintenance environment.
• Formal training in fire alarm systems (Simplex/Edwards preferred).
• Knowledge of HVAC, digital control, intruder alarm, CCTV systems.
• Knowledge of building codes, electrical codes and CSA standards.
• Valid Class 5 BC driver's license; may require Class 2.
• First Aid Level 2 certification.
• Ability to read drawings/specifications.
• AutoCAD proficiency is an asset.
• Microsoft Office and maintenance management software familiarity is an asset.

Specific Duties

• Perform installation, preventative maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of electrical systems, assemblies, equipment, tools, and fixtures/finishes in/around buildings/grounds.
• Provide input, recommendations to Facilities Services Management on new or rehabilitation electrical projects, ensuring systems are to the highest industry standard.
• Inspect, monitor and report on quality of electrical related work performed and of work performed by others to ensure industry standard, project drawing/specification, building code, electrical code requirements are being met at all times.
• Ensure plans and schematic record drawings are kept current, reflecting changes or alterations made to electrical systems and equipment.
• Ensure that appropriate permits are obtained, appropriate inspections are requested, licensing is maintained, and all records are kept to meet regulatory requirements.
• Perform maintenance, operation, and programming of fire alarm systems
• Perform or assist with installation and maintenance of various equipment and wiring such as HVAC , data, digital control, intruder alarm, security access control, and CCTV systems.
• Keep in regular contact with the Facilities Services Supervisor to ensure safety, quality and productivity expectations set by Facilities Services Management are being achieved.
• Ensure other staff receives orientation, training, and instruction with electrical/maintenance related equipment, tools and tasks.
• Follow occupational health and safety codes, safe work practices, and use/wear personal protective equipment and job/task specific safety equipment.
• Perform short-form work order specific safety hazard assessments, and prepare and follow work order specific safety plans.
• Provide input into the preparation of preventative maintenance work schedules.
• Ensure all work orders are carried out according to priority, procedures, preventative maintenance work schedules and other schedules as approved by Facilities Services Management.
• Prepare estimates of time, material take-offs, equipment lists, and costs for work orders.
• Keep and report records of time and costs of all work performed.
• Communicate with service providers and suppliers to obtain pricing, schedule services, order supplies, confirm supplies are received and work is successfully completed.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment and restock as required.
• Ensure all work is performed in accordance and compliance with all regulatory codes, safety regulations, and legislation.
• Use various electronic devices including but not limited to two-way radios, cellular telephones, smartphones, computers, etc.
• Perform installation, maintenance and repairs of all parts of buildings and grounds, including but not limited to soft and hard landscaping, interior/exterior architectural building assemblies and finish systems, carpentry framing, electrical systems, plumbing piping systems, HVAC systems, window/door assemblies, hardware, locks, paint and flooring etc.
• Perform event set-up, snow and ice removal, de-icing and sanding, and general clean-up.
• When assigned, perform pick-ups/deliveries, passenger van/bus and general driving duties and keep appropriate documentation as required.
• Perform emergency procedures including but not limited to fire alarms, emergency evacuation.
• Perform preventative maintenance of fleet vehicles.
• Ensure proper care, maintenance, and inventory of tools and equipment.
• Ensure that all work is carried out with the least amount of disruption to affected areas and the college community.
• Keep all electrical rooms, vaults, workshops, and storage areas organized and orderly.
• Makes recommendations to Facilities Services Management on best courses of action to resolve issues and ways to improve safety, reduce maintenance requirements, reduce costs, save time, reduce energy usage, increase service quality, increase productivity, etc.
• Required to be called in for emergencies and equipment failure.
• Keep knowledge current with building code, electrical code, industry standards, industry news/changes and emerging techniques and technology.
• Perform other related duties as directed by the Facilities Services Supervisor and/or Facilities Services Management.

Skills & Qualifications

• Must have successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Must have ITA Red Seal Electrician Trade Qualification

• Must have or may be required to obtain Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification.
• Must have or may be required to obtain W.H.M.I.S. certification.
• minimum of 5 years work experience in an institutional buildings maintenance environment or equivalent.
• Must have formal training in the installation, maintenance, operation, and programming of fire alarm systems with preference given to Simplex and Edwards systems.
• Must have formal training and knowledge of installation and maintenance of HVAC , digital control, intruder alarm, security access control, and CCTV systems.
• Must have good knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, and CSA standards
• Must have ability to build and maintain positive and effective working relationships and work harmoniously with others including staff, administrators, students, faculty, service providers, contractors, suppliers and the general public.
• Must have good knowledge of institutional buildings maintenance and grounds-keeping.
• Must have ability to safely and productively use ladders, scaffolding, jacks, hand carts etc. and various stationary and hand power tools/equipment, and is mechanically inclined, and has good knowledge of all trades.
• Must be in good physical condition with the full ability to regularly lift, handle and position commonly-used spools of wire, plywood, other building materials, ladders, tools, equipment, furniture, cabinets and other related equipment and items.
• Must have or obtain certification to operate skid-steer loader, fork-lift, scissor-lift, articulating boom-lift and any other related tools and equipment.
• May be required to obtain certification to operate other maintenance/grounds equipment.
• Must have the ability to interpret and read drawings and specifications.
• Training/experience in operating AutoCAD software is an asset and is preferred.
• Training/experience and proficiency in operating Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and maintenance management software is an asset and is preferred.
• Must have ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must have good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, excellent troubleshooting and organizational skills.
• Must have and maintain a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
• May be required to obtain a valid Class 2 BC driver’s license.
• Must have or may be required to obtain a Level 2 Occupational First Aid Certification.
