Hours of Work: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday

Salary: $2,060.32 bi-weekly, as per the Skilled Labourer Classification within the C.U.P.E Collective Agreement.

Job Profile

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, the Skilled Labourer performs various manual duties in the maintenance of the water treatment plant.

As The Skilled Labourer, You Will
  • Operate a variety of tools such as pumps, power tools, and hand tools and maintain them in a safe condition.
  • Operate, clean and maintain vehicles such as pick-up trucks or vans in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Maintain shops, garages and yards in safe and clean condition.
  • Maintain yard and vehicle inventories to ensure their continuous availability.
  • Ensure compliance with Worker's Compensation Legislation, Human Rights Legislation, safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Practice established safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, fellow employees, the public and equipment operated.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the classification, as required and assigned.
Your Education And Qualifications Include
  • Grade 12, or equivalent in training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of tools and/or machinery to perform general maintenance/repair work.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Working knowledge of Department facilities operation and structure.
  • Working knowledge of a variety of material and products utilized by the Department.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that is applicable to the area of work. (i.e. Confined entry, hazardous conditions, etc.).
  • IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Conditions Of Employment
  • The successful candidate must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful candidate possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence. The successful applicant will be required to provide a Notice of Driver's Licence In Force document upon request.
  • Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties of the position, but are not limited to: ability to lift 50 lbs., repetitive movement, crouching, kneeling, standing, climbing stairs, and continuous walking working outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions. May be required to work from scaffolds, ladders, in confined spaces and in hazardous locations.
  • Must successfully pass a respirator fit test (requires employee to be clean shaven at work) and confined entry training.
Position Reports To: Facilities Maintenance Supervisor
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo a medical assessment at the Occupational Health Branch.
  • The various work environments that the position may encounter during the course of a normal working day may subject an employee to noxious odours, gas, dust and occasional exposure to adverse weather.
  • The successful applicant may be required to work in confined areas, on roofs, in excavations, at varied heights and hazardous locations where wearing of respirator masks/safety glasses, safety equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus are necessary.
  • The successful applicant will be required to complete job specific training required for this position as directed.
