Job summary

ATCO Frontec is seeking a Site Operations Manager for the North of 60 Projects Team to lead field execution on complex construction projects in remote environments. The role requires strong leadership, practical problem-solving, and disciplined planning and reporting.

Key responsibilities include directing trades and vendors, coordinating electrical, mechanical, civil, and other activities, and ensuring safety, quality, and client commitments.

Qualifications

  • Progressive experience leading field execution on construction, industrial, infrastructure, technology, facilities, or equipment installation projects.
  • Broad practical knowledge across electrical, mechanical, controls, civil, structural, and general construction.
  • Experience supervising employees, trades, subcontractors, and vendors in active project environments.
  • Ability to interpret varied design drawings, specifications, schedules, and technical documents.
  • Proven ability to plan work, coordinate interfaces, solve field problems, and make decisions with limited direction.
  • Strong computer skills, including email, Word, Excel, Teams, document management, and digital reporting tools.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including professional site reporting and stakeholder updates.
  • Ability to work from an office or home-based setting between assignments and travel for prolonged periods to Northern sites, other project locations, supplier facilities, and partner locations.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to meet site access requirements.
  • Able to obtain Federal Government Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day site execution with limited oversight and maintain a safe, accountable, and productive site culture.
  • Direct employees, trades, subcontractors, vendors, and equipment operators; set priorities and coordinate daily and weekly work fronts.
  • Monitor progress, workmanship, manpower, equipment, constraints, and schedule performance; address or elevate issues early.
  • Make sound field decisions under pressure while protecting safety, quality, cost, schedule, and client commitments.
  • Coordinate electrical, mechanical, controls, civil, structural, architectural, and general construction activities.
  • Read and interpret drawings, specifications, single-line diagrams, schematics, P&IDs, control narratives, schedules, manuals, and vendor documents.
  • Identify constructability issues, design conflicts, interface gaps, and missing information; work with engineering, project management, vendors, and trades on practical solutions.
  • Provide hands-on technical support and troubleshooting within applicable trade and regulatory limits.
  • Support execution planning during office or home-based periods, including sequencing, look-aheads, constructability reviews, material readiness, workforce planning, and mobilization.
  • Coordinate with project management, engineering, procurement, logistics, clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and local stakeholders.
  • Confirm that tools, materials, equipment, permits, information, and qualified resources are available before work begins.
  • Manage changing priorities, weather, transportation constraints, and limited resources common to remote project delivery.
  • Prepare concise daily reports covering completed work, manpower, equipment, progress, safety, quality, weather, delays, constraints, and upcoming activities.
  • Maintain photographs, timesheets, delivery and inspection records, redlines, deficiencies, field instructions, and material tracking.
  • Use Microsoft 365, project management systems, and digital field tools; document field conditions and impacts supporting change management.

ATCO Frontec's business is organized into three operating units: Major Projects, Operations, and ATCO Frontec International. This position is part of Major Projects, which pursues and delivers large-scale construction, infrastructure, and capital projects from development through commissioning.

Position Overview

The North of 60 Projects Team, part of ATCO Frontec's Major Projects Business Unit, is seeking a versatile, hands-on Site Operations Manager to lead field execution on complex projects in remote and challenging environments. The successful candidate will combine broad technical knowledge, practical problem-solving, strong leadership, and disciplined planning and reporting.

Key Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Execution
  • Lead day-to-day site execution with limited oversight and maintain a safe, accountable, and productive site culture.

  • Direct employees, trades, subcontractors, vendors, and equipment operators; set priorities and coordinate daily and weekly work fronts.

  • Monitor progress, workmanship, manpower, equipment, constraints, and schedule performance; address or elevate issues early.

  • Make sound field decisions under pressure while protecting safety, quality, cost, schedule, and client commitments.

Multi-Discipline Coordination
  • Coordinate electrical, mechanical, controls, civil, structural, architectural, and general construction activities.

  • Read and interpret drawings, specifications, single-line diagrams, schematics, P&IDs, control narratives, schedules, manuals, and vendor documents.

  • Identify constructability issues, design conflicts, interface gaps, and missing information; work with engineering, project management, vendors, and trades on practical solutions.

  • Provide hands-on technical support and troubleshooting within applicable trade and regulatory limits.

Planning, Logistics & Project Support
  • Support execution planning during office or home-based periods, including sequencing, look-aheads, constructability reviews, material readiness, workforce planning, and mobilization.

  • Coordinate with project management, engineering, procurement, logistics, clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and local stakeholders.

  • Confirm that tools, materials, equipment, permits, information, and qualified resources are available before work begins.

  • Manage changing priorities, weather, transportation constraints, and limited resources common to remote project delivery.

Safety, Quality & Closeout
  • Lead work in accordance with company, client, regulatory, and project-specific safety and quality requirements.

  • Support safety meetings, hazard assessments, inspections, permits, testing, commissioning, deficiencies, non-conformances, and turnover.

  • Stop or correct unsafe, non-compliant, or poor-quality work and ensure follow-up is completed.

Reporting & Documentation
  • Prepare concise daily reports covering completed work, manpower, equipment, progress, safety, quality, weather, delays, constraints, and upcoming activities.

  • Maintain photographs, timesheets, delivery and inspection records, redlines, deficiencies, field instructions, and material tracking.

  • Use Microsoft 365, project management systems, and digital field tools; document field conditions and impacts supporting change management.

Preferred Assets
  • Journeyperson certification, construction management credential, engineering technology diploma, or equivalent technical training and field experience.

  • Remote Northern, Arctic, fly-in/fly-out, camp-based, or other travel-intensive project experience.

  • Experience with power generation, water or wastewater treatment, building systems, controls, communications, fuel systems, utilities, or industrial equipment.

  • Experience with remote logistics, testing, commissioning, start-up, deficiency resolution, and turnover.

  • Experience operating or directing common site equipment such as skid steers, telehandlers, and aerial work platforms.

Safety Certifications (Preferred)

CSTS 2020 or equivalent; WHMIS; Standard First Aid with CPR; Fall Protection; Elevated Work Platform / MEWP; Ground Disturbance; Confined Space; Lockout/Tagout; and other client or site-specific training as required.

Work Environment
  • Combination of office or home-based project planning and field assignments.

  • Frequent travel, including prolonged stints at Northern sites, other project locations, supplier facilities, and partner locations.

  • Site assignments may involve camp accommodation, isolated locations, variable weather, physically demanding conditions, and extended workdays during critical periods.
