Job summary

Pomerleau in Kingston, Ontario is seeking a Site Health & Safety Coordinator to drive health and safety excellence on a major construction project. You will work hands-on on sites and advise project teams on the company’s H&S program, ensuring compliance with OH&S regulations.

The role emphasizes leadership, training, incident investigations, and proactive safety improvement. A 3+ year track record in construction safety, a relevant degree, and First Aid Level 2 are required, with COR/BCCSA

Qualifications

  • 3+ years in construction and health and safety management
  • OH&S or Risk Management degree/certification
  • NCSO designation is a plus
  • First Aid Level 2 is required
  • Experience with COR and Safety Group (BCCSA)
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Knowledge of Kingston market
  • Proficient computer skills

Responsibilities

  • Advise and mentor project teams to enforce the health and safety program
  • Lead health and safety on the project and apply safety standards
  • Assist with development of construction plans and hazard identification
  • Conduct regular site inspections
  • Lead incident investigations and liaise with Regional Manager
  • Promote prevention program usage
  • Monitor and audit Project Safety Plan compliance
  • Authorize work stoppages with corrective plan
  • Provide Health and Safety training and coaching
  • Support emergency response for projects
  • Compile monthly Health and Safety statistics
  • Participate in project wrap-up

What you will do
  • Put your knowledge of Pomerleau’s Health and Safety program to work through advisement, mentorship and assistance with project teams to ensure companywide compliance;
  • Demonstrate leadership in Health & Safety on the project. Effectively apply the requirements of the project specific safety standards to promote Pomerleau’s H&S standards, applicable OH&S Act, Regulation and Codes with all employees and trade partners on the project;
  • Jump right in from project start-up to assist with the development of construction plans, kick-off meetings and hazard identification;
  • Get active and out on our construction sites to conduct regular site inspections;
  • Be the lead of incident investigations by taking a closer look at the investigation requirements and associated high risk elements while keeping the lines of communication open with your Regional Manager of Health and Safety;
  • Promote the idea of thinking ahead and utilizing our prevention program;
  • Take pride in monitoring, auditing and support to ensure Project Safety Plan compliance while always looking for opportunities to improve safety performance;
  • Confidently order work stoppages as required alongside the creation of a plan of correction;
  • Share your knowledge and be a role model by providing Health and Safety training and coaching opportunities;
  • Utilize and support emergency response for projects;
  • Effectively compile project Health and Safety statistics monthly;
  • Celebrate project success and completion and be a key member of the project wrap-up process.
This role could be for you if you have
  • Ideally 3+ years’ experience in the construction industry and health and safety management within the civil, infrastructure, and / or ICI industry;
  • A University Degree, College Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety and/or Risk Management or a combination of education and industry experience;
  • A minimum of NCSO designation would be considered an asset;
  • Holder of the Occupational First Aid Level 2 certification is required;
  • Experience with Certificate of Recognition (COR) and Safety Group (BCCSA);
  • Outstanding leadership, coaching and interpersonal skills are essential;
  • A dynamic and creative approach with a flair for being proactive and applying good judgement techniques in all situations;
  • Strong communications skills, both verbal and written;
  • Good computer skills are a must;
  • Knowledge of the Kingston market

Please note that this position requires candidates to be eligible to obtain and maintain a Level I (Reliability) Security Clearance. As part of the recruitment process, applicants must be able to provide 5 years of verifiable background information, including employment history, educational background, addresses, and other information required to support the security clearance process.
