Simulation modalities include high- and low-fidelity mannequins, task trainers, standardized patients, virtual reality (VR), and interprofessional scenarios. The Simulation Technologist ensures that lab environments are prepared, simulation sessions run smoothly, and all equipment is maintained and ready for use. This includes supporting both traditional and VR-based simulation activities.
This position is ideal for a technically skilled individual who enjoys working hands-on in a fast-paced, educational setting and collaborating with faculty, staff, and learners to support high-quality, realistic, and psychologically safe healthcare simulation experiences.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate simulation lab equipment, including high- and low-fidelity mannequins, task trainers, simulation control software, and immersive technologies.
- Support the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of virtual reality (VR) simulation hardware and software.
- Collaborate with AV, IT, and Facilities teams to ensure integration of simulation technologies with supporting systems (e.g., video capture tools, displays, networked computers). Perform first-level AV troubleshooting and setup.
- Use ticketing or support request systems to coordinate technical support and address simulation-related issues.
- Maintain inventory using institutional digital systems for tracking simulation equipment, consumables, and lending workflows.
- Process equipment loans and usage logs in the system; support asset planning through accurate data entry and tracking.
- Perform routine maintenance, updates, and cleaning of simulation hardware and software; coordinate service and repairs with vendors as needed.
- Assist faculty, staff, and simulated patients/participants with technical preparation for simulations; orient users to equipment as required.
- Provide task-specific training to student assistants or new staff on simulation setup and safety procedures.
- Support or lead technical demonstrations and orientation sessions for faculty and staff.
- Ensure safety protocols, infection control procedures, and operational standards are upheld in simulation spaces.
- Contribute to technical documentation, setup guides, and lab procedures.
- Participate in simulation-related special events, tours, equipment demonstrations, and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in a health professional field or in biomedical engineering technology, electronics, health informatics, or a related technical or health sciences field.
- 1–3 years of experience in simulation, technical support, or healthcare lab operations.
- Demonstrated experience with simulation platforms such as Laerdal, Gaumard, Elevate Healthcare, and their associated software systems used in health professions education.
- Working knowledge of virtual reality (VR) systems in educational or clinical training contexts (an asset).
- Familiarity with ticketing systems or willingness to learn.
- Proficiency with computer systems beyond Microsoft 365, including inventory tracking software and web-based equipment lending platforms.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage time-sensitive situations independently.
- Effective communicator and team player with excellent organization and attention to detail.
- Physically able to lift and move equipment (up to 50 lbs).
- CHSOS certification is an asset, or willingness to pursue after hire.
