Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) is seeking a Signal Maintainer in Gravenhurst to design, install, and maintain rail signal equipment. The role supports rail safety and requires outdoor work in all weather conditions, with occasional after‑hours responses and travel to USA for training.

The position emphasizes training in railway signaling, a two-year commitment post-certification, and a strong orientation to safety, compliance with CROR and related rules.

Qualifications

  • Secondary School Diploma or GED.
  • Certificate of training from Railway Signal Training or a college/university diploma/degree in electrical/electronic field.
  • Strong aptitude for the electrical/electronic field.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel 90% of the time, including some overnight stays.
  • Experience in railway environment is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, constructs, maintains and repairs designated signal equipment (track signal circuits) as assigned.
  • Assists in the installation, removal or alteration of various signal appliances or their associated track circuitry as required.
  • Temporarily disconnects signal system wires in areas where rails & ties are being replaced.
  • Carries out scheduled system tests, records results and maintains records as required.
  • Ensures tests are completed in accordance with regulations and mandated timelines.
  • Responds to emergency repair situations during and after regular working hours, sometimes on holidays and weekends.
  • Be in good physical condition to perform job duties outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Responsible for assigned work equipment within their division.

$30.74 per hour Apprentice Rate (with increases based on school)
$40.33 per hour certified

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:

The Signal Maintainer is responsible for constructing, installing, maintaining, repairing or renewing any apparatus, or performs electrical and other work pertaining to Signals Department equipment that controls rail traffic and safeguards employees and the general public.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Designs, constructs, maintains and repairs designated signal equipment (track signal circuits) as assigned
  • Assists in the installation, removal or alteration of various signal appliances or their associated track circuitry as required

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • Comprehensive Training and Signals Certification included — invest in your growth with support every step of the way (Two‑year commitment required post‑certification)
  • Applicants must demonstrate willingness to receive training as deemed necessary in the field of railway signaling
  • This is considered a safety-sensitive position; therefore, applicants must pass Transport Canada mandated medical examinations including testing for color vision & hearing acuity
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Secondary School Diploma or GED
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a current certificate of training from a recognized Railway Signal Training course or those possessing a college/university diploma/degree in the electrical/electronic field
  • Strong aptitude for the electrical/ electronic field
  • Applicants must be motivated self-starters, capable of working alone or in a group
  • Must possess a valid Ontario driver’s license
  • Basic computer skills
  • Valid passport and the ability to travel to the USA for training
  • Ability to travel 90% of the time including some overnight stays as required
  • Experience working in a railway environment is considered an asset
  • Ability to understand/pass Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR), safety rules and any other rules deemed necessary by the company
