Job summary

Day & Ross in Moncton, NB seeks a Shunt Driver to ensure the safe handling of inbound and outbound trailers in the Terminal Yard. You will keep the yard clean and follow all safety practices.

You will move trailers, park equipment, conduct yard and reefer checks, seal trailers, assist dock and line haul drivers, operate a forklift, and promptly report safety incidents in a high-volume environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Secondary education.
  • 1 year of experience driving a shunt truck preferred.
  • Class 1 license preferred but not mandatory with experience.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and operate in a fast-paced yard.
  • Safety-minded, self-motivated and able to work with little supervision.
  • English language; other languages are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Move trailers to and from dock doors.
  • Park and organize equipment in the yard.
  • Record trailer numbers, refer settings, fuel level, and seal numbers.
  • Conduct reefer checks including unit number and fuel level.
  • Seal trailers and ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, safe yard and assist dock operations.
  • Assist Line haul and P&D drivers with equipment needs.
  • Operate a forklift in congested areas.
  • Report safety violations or security breaches.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Job description

The Shunt Driver is responsible for ensuring proper, safe and timely handling of inbound and outbound trailers within the Terminal Yard. The successful candidate must ensure they maintain a clean work environment with a focus on proper handling techniques and safety.

How You'll Help:
  • Move trailers to and from the dock doors.
  • Park and organize equipment in the yard.
  • Conduct a yard check, which includes recording trailer numbers, refer settings, fuel level, trailer contents or seal numbers.
  • Conduct reefer check including unit number, reefer settings and fuel level.
  • Seal trailers and verify required.
  • Ensure yard is clean and operated in a safe manner.
  • Assist Line haul and P&D Drivers with locating, positioning and other equipment requirements.
  • Assist on Dock regularly.
  • Moving and handling large and cumbersome freight in a dock environment (50-75 lbs)
  • Operating a Forklift in congested areas.
  • Report any incidents of safety violation or security breaches.
  • Other related duties as may be required.
Your Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of Secondary education
  • Previous Transportation or operational experience is preferred; at least 1-year experience driving a shunt truck is preferred.
  • Class 1 license preferred but not necessary with applicable experience.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Safety-minded.
  • Able to work deadlines in high transactional environment.
  • Ability to champion business needs in a collaborative manner to colleagues.
  • Results focused.
  • English, other languages considered an asset
