Reporting to the Manager, Equipment, the Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing Maintenance Operations and equipment on all projects, ensuring the equipment is maintained to the highest standards.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with management of all aspects of the maintenance hub and spoke sites across the country (AB, BC, SK, MB, etc.) in accordance with each region’s business plan and budget.
- Ensure proper maintenance and repair of equipment at all sites by managing fleet maintenance activities.
- Communicate regularly with supervisors, planners, and parts personnel to optimize maintenance hub activity.
- Make staffing recommendations, interview applicants, assess training needs, develop training programs, and train staff in fleet operations, repair, and maintenance. Also, counsel employees, recommend disciplinary actions, and maintain employee records.
- Ensure adherence to all relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Support safety programs and safety attest actively.
- Ensure safety compliance of repair and maintenance teams, including tailgate meetings and site inspections.
- Provide leadership to maintenance staff and foster a collaborative environment.
- Coordinate company-owned and third-party vehicle and equipment rentals.
- Monitor trends and innovations in equipment and rolling stock maintenance.
- Assist in forecasting replacements for heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
- Ensure accurate and timely coding of invoices and timesheets.
- Track and process warranty claims for new machines.
- Manage the company's lubricant analysis program.
- Assist in specifying new equipment and warranty packages.
- Communicate with clients, support staff, and management for problem-solving.
- Coordinate fleet utilization and disposals.
- Manage meter readings and Vision Link compliance to ensure timely maintenance and repairs.
- Assist with KPI tracking.
- Track vehicles and equipment for billing and job costing.
- Mentor mechanical staff and apprentices.
- Prepare and approve requisitions for parts and supplies; develop inventory controls.
- Supervise maintenance staff and facilities in Calgary, potentially acting for the Fleet Manager in their absence.
- Travel minimally to various locations as required.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
The successful candidate will have:
- 8-10 years of management experience in the heavy equipment industry, including shop and field repair capabilities.
- Extensive knowledge of maintenance and repair methods, materials, and equipment for heavy and power-driven equipment.
- Skilled in operating tools and equipment used in heavy equipment repair.
- Ability to multitask and meet objectives/deliverables.
- Leadership skills to mentor and lead trades personnel.
- Results-oriented with strong interpersonal skills.
- Self-starter with adaptability to change.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Physical ability to stand, climb, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs for extended periods.
- Strong commitment to health, safety, environment, and customer service.
- Valid safety tickets: H2S, Confined Space, Forklift, First Aid, WHMIS, TDG, PST.
- Teamwork and safety-conscious attitude.
