Job summary

Job Type: Permanent Full-Time
Reports To: Director of Shelter and Transitional Programs

Positions: Awake Overnight Thursday- Saturday 12am-8am (Shelter) and Sunday 11pm-7am Transitional Program.

Job Summary

The Client Support Worker provides direct support, safety, resources, and advocacy to women transitioning from crisis situations - such as homelessness, domestic violence, substance use and mental health challenges - into stable housing and independence. This role prioritizes harm reduction, trauma-informed care and client centred services for individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use, mental health challenge, or other barriers to stable housing. The Client Support Workers will adhere to the AG Shelter and Transitional Housing policy and procedure, creating a safe and stable environment that fosters residents’ well-being.

Grounded in trauma-informed care and client centred practice, the Client Support Worker plays a key role in supporting residents as they navigate their path to stable housing. This position operates in alignment with the Mission and Values of NOW Canada Society.

Position Overview

The Shelter and Transitional Housing Client Support Worker provides direct support to women, youth and children accessing AG Shelter and Transitional Housing. This role focuses on crisis intervention, emotional support, life skills development, and housing stability. The ideal candidate is compassionate, adaptable, and committed to a trauma-informed, and harm reduction approach

Key Responsibilities
Resident Support and Crisis Intervention
  • Welcome and assist residents with a respectful, inclusive and non-judgmental approach.
  • Provide emotional support, guidance, and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Conduct intake assessments, develop individualized support plans, and set achievable goals with residents.
  • Support residents in meeting their basis needs.
  • Conduct regular check-ins to help residents maintain housing stability.
Program and Resource Navigation
  • Offer referrals to community resources such as counseling, health care, substance use, and mental health support.
  • Assist residents in securing permanent housing by providing rental assistance information and application support.
  • Organize life skills workshops
  • Distribute harm reduction supplies and provide education on safer substance use practices.
Shelter and Transitional Housing Operations
  • Monitor and maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.
  • Conduct safety checks and uphold shelter guidelines while maintaining a low-barrier, client centred approach.
  • Implement house expectations, mediate conflicts, and foster an environment of mutual respect.
  • Assist with meal distribution, laundry, and facility organization as needed.
Documentation and Team Collaboration
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports for program documentation, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with organizational policies.
  • Communicate effectively during shift changes to ensure continuity of care.
  • Collaborate with community agencies, service providers, and internal teams to provide holistic support.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
Qualifications and Requirements
Required
  • Diploma in Social Services or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in social services, harm reduction, crisis intervention, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of issues related to homelessness, substance use, mental health and trauma.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, and dynamic environment while maintaining empathy and professionalism.
  • Strong communication, de-escalation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Certifications: Standard First Aid, Naloxone training, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (or willingness to obtain).
  • Criminal record check required (vulnerable populations)
  • Valid drivers license and a driver abstract in good standing may be required.

  • Hourly wage based on NOW Canada’s wage grid.

Pay: $29.50-$33.54 per hour
