Job description

Sessional Lecturer- BIO207H5S: Introductory Genetics

Course description: The principles of Mendelian inheritance and modern genetics are illustrated using examples from medical research, evolutionary biology, agriculture and conservation biology. Topics covered include: chromosome theory of inheritance, basic eukaryotic chromosome mapping, gene and chromosome mutation, the lac system, the extranuclear genome, population and quantitative genetics. In tutorials, students will work through problem sets related to lecture material as well as probability and statistical analysis.

Estimated course enrolment: 500

Estimated TA support: 770 total hours- to be adjusted according to actual enrolment

Sessional dates of appointment: Jan 1-Apr 30, 2026

Salary (0.5 FCE) (In accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement):

Effective September 1, 2025:

Sessional Lecturer I - $9,820.70

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term - $10,510.04

Sessional Lecturer II - $10,510.04

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term - $10,760.28

Sessional Lecturer III - $10,760.28

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term - $11,030.36

All pay rates are inclusive of vacation pay. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.

Qualifications: The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Biology or related field. The decision on hiring will be based on previous teaching experience in this course or other similar courses, academic qualifications, ability, and suitability for the position.

Description of duties: Normal duties associated with teaching a university course, including preparation and delivery of course content, development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams, calculation and submission of grades, contact with students by regular office hours. Completion of all grades (may include make-up exams). This course will have synchronous online lectures and tutorials, and the position will include supervision of the day-to-day work of any Sessional Instructional Assistants or Teaching Assistants assigned to the course.
