Job summary

Job Title: Service Technician I

Vanderlande is the global market leader in baggage handling systems for airports and sorting systems for parcel and postal services. The company is also a leading supplier of warehouse automation solutions. Established in 1949, Vanderlande has over 9,000 employees, including 1,900 in North America. It has built a large advanced automated warehouse for one of the largest retailers in Canada and is seeking a Service Technician to support this state‑of‑the‑art facility.

Overview

As a Service Technician I, you will work closely with cross‑functional teams to ensure efficient preventive maintenance and swift troubleshooting of high‑tech warehouse systems. You will be responsible for both mechanical and electrical support and play a key role in maintaining safety and operational excellence.

Essential Functions
  • Provide troubleshooting support for non‑routine problems in the material handling system.
  • Resolve complex errors in an Auto Case Picking (ACP) system.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot mechanical components such as motors, motor‑gearbox assemblies, rollers, bearings, shafts, and sprockets.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot electrical control components including photo eyes, motor starters, relays, limit switches, proximity sensors, solenoids, encoders, and variable frequency drives.
  • Communicate with stakeholders regarding work performed and present status of specialty systems.
  • Interpret engineering drawings related to layout, location, and operation.
  • Execute preventive maintenance (both electrical and mechanical).
  • Report on completed maintenance activities.
  • Analyze system errors.
  • Replace machine spare parts.
  • Report problems and maintenance activities requiring attention.
  • Respond to call‑outs, faults, alarms, and warnings; monitor the system from the Control Room.
  • Ensure compliance with all Vanderlande programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties or assignments as occasionally required by management.
Required Education & Experience
  • Electrical license (Industrial Electrician Trade Certification) or Certified Construction/Maintenance Electrician, or “Red Seal” Industrial Millwright License.
  • Experience supporting automated systems with a proficient level of electro‑mechanical skills.
  • Electrical fault‑finding and fault‑rectification skills, including field device replacement and configuration.
  • Mechanical fault‑finding and fault‑rectification skills (gearboxes, bearings, sprockets, drives).
  • Experience with electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Proficiency in using standard electrical test instruments.
  • Relevant vocational and/or technical qualifications.
Other Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Warehouse Operations experience.
  • Experience in conveyor or material handling services.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, including Siemens controls.
  • Ability to read diagrams, electrical drawings, operation manuals, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Proficiency in hand tools, precision measuring, and testing instruments.
  • Flexibility to shift priorities quickly.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer and service orientation.
  • Basic computer and equipment familiarity.
  • Problem‑solving under pressure.
  • Pro‑active attitude toward process improvement.
  • Ability to work in a high‑stress environment.
Position Details
  • Position Type/Hours: Full‑time, rotating shift covering 24/7 operation (days and nights).
  • Travel: No travel required.
  • Supervisory Responsibility: None.
  • Physical Demands: Regularly required to communicate information, climb, reach, sit, kneel, crawl, and lift objects up to 50 lbs. Occasionally required to lift and transfer 50–120 lbs.
  • Work Environment: Exposure to mechanical and electrical components, vibration, and elevated noise levels. Ear protection is required.
  • Salary Range: CAD$80,000–85,000 (base salary, eligible for performance bonus).
