Job description

About WCB Nova ScotiaOn behalf of WCB Nova Scotia, Venor is recruiting for a Senior Writer.

By working to keep Nova Scotians safe, healthy, and on the job, and supporting them when their lives are impacted by workplace injury, WCB Nova Scotia is contributing to a safer, stronger province. We provide workplace injury insurance to approximately 19,500 employers and 335,000 workers across the province. Our vision is a Nova Scotia safe and secure from workplace injury.

WCB Nova Scotia is consistently recognized as a Top Employer in Atlantic Canada and Nova Scotia, and has also been recognized nationally as a Top 100 Employer and as one of Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures. A supportive work environment, a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, and flexible/hybrid work are just some of the benefits.

It’s an exciting time to work for the WCB as the organization embarks on a transformational path, guided by a new strategic plan founded in a simple vision – to protect the Nova Scotia workforce.

About the Role

As WCB Nova Scotia’s Senior Writer, you’ll help connect, influence and inspire through words. Day to day, you’ll collaborate with both Marketing and Communications teams, crafting compelling copy that brings our vision to reality: Protecting the Nova Scotia workforce. Your storytelling will reach diverse audiences—from workers and employers to healthcare providers and the broader Nova Scotia community.

You’ll write for our websites, marketing materials, business letters, video content, and important publications like annual reports. Your job will be to take complex information about workplace safety and return to work and turn it into compelling stories and messages that everyone can understand and act on.

This role is central to how WCB communicates with workers, employers, and all Nova Scotians. Your writing will help people understand what we do, how we can help them, and why injury prevention and return to work matters.

Simply put, you know how to use words that work.

About You

As an experienced writer, you excel at connecting people with information and ideas through words. You are skilled at crafting clear, concise, and engaging copy for a variety of audiences, as well as delivering integrated cross-platform content with a customer-first storytelling approach. In terms of writing, you’ve done it all. You know what it means to write for different audiences and mediums. Your experience includes writing compelling website content, marketing materials, emails, business letters, and corporate publications, to name a few. Regardless of the content, you have experience working within brand guidelines to develop and maintain a consistent voice across multiple platforms.

Reporting to the Manager, Marketing, the role will be responsible for:

  • Writing and editing website copy that connects employers, workers, and Nova Scotians with key information about WCB, workplace insurance, injury prevention, and return-to-work programs. This includes understanding Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and integrating relevant keywords and customer insights into content copy and/or overall tone.
  • Crafting engaging content for various initiatives and formats, including letters, business documents, marketing materials, social media, videos and more.
  • Developing and/or maintaining a consistent tone and voice style guide for WCB’s brand across all materials.
  • Pitching creative content ideas and taking direction from team members to inform content development based on priorities. This includes collaborating with subject matter experts to translate technical information into meaningful copy tailored to the audience and medium.
  • Managing daily deliverables and presenting work to team members.
  • Working with the Marketing and Communications team, as well as other business units, to understand project goals and audience insights in order to write content that drives desired outcomes.
  • Conducting research to better understand target audiences, relevant keywords, and creating content that resonates.
  • Editing and proofreading content to ensure clarity, grammar, and adherence to brand guidelines.
  • Staying up-to-date with content trends, including plain language writing, writing for behaviour change through nudging, and web writing best practices.
  • Other content-related duties as required by the role.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Arts, Journalism, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional copywriting experience, preferably in a public sector, news/feature writing, or agency environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing for the web, including SEO and content
  • optimization.
  • A certificate in SEO is considered an asset.

An equivalent combination of a degree in another area of study and significant additional writing experience may be considered.

Candidates will be required to provide a selection of their professional work portfolio, showcasing a variety of writing: web content, marketing collateral, and business communication projects.

WCB offers a competitive compensation package including a salary range of $69,709 – $87,131. Some of the benefits include a flexible/hybrid work model, and benefits such as 3-weeks vacation to start, a health spending account, and a defined benefit pension plan, to name a few. Any offer of employment will be conditional upon the completion of all applicable background checks, including a criminal record check and confirmation of credentials, the results of which must be satisfactory to the WCB.

Venor and WCB embrace a culture of belonging in the workplace. No matter who you are, where you’re from, how you think, what you believe in, or who you love, we welcome your application. We all come from different backgrounds and different walks of life, bringing in unique perspectives and experiences.
