Job description

Established in 2006, Crombie believes in building high-quality, sustainable real estate that enhances communities for the long term, while investing in welcoming, convenient properties where people want to live, work, shop, and play. Crombie’s stability is anchored in grocery-focused and necessity-based retail assets and includes retail-related industrial and mixed-use residential properties. With ~300 employees, Crombie manages 18.8M square feet across 303 properties, with a $5B total enterprise value.

Reporting to the President & Chief Executive Officer and working closely with the Board’s HR Committee, the Senior Vice President, People & Culture leads the human resources and communications functions for Crombie’s 300 staff across Canada. This role ensures the systems, programs, practices and talent of the company are scalable for future growth.

This role is based in Nova Scotia, either at our urban office in bustling Halifax or by the sea on the north shore in New Glasgow.

What this role is :

The SVP will be tasked with building processes and systems that support recent structural changes, ultimately ensuring that P&C’s goals are embedded in the business itself. This role requires an aptitude for, and interest in, real estate operations, ensuring the people function is a trusted advisor to the CEO, board and executive team. Key priorities include enhancing succession planning and employee engagement, strengthening compensation structures, increasing rigor around KPIs and change leadership to ensure execution of these elements.

This role also provides leadership to the communications function, ensuring Crombie’s brand is intentionally reflected internally and externally, increasing cohesion and maximizing marketing efforts for lease-ups.

Who you are :

The SVP must be creative, focused on continuous improvement to scale systems and practices while remaining true to Crombie’s nimble and entrepreneurial roots. Key to success is operating strategically as a partner to the business and advisor to the board while also being close enough to the ground to know the details inside and out. With broad experience and skills, including in governance and relationship management, the SVP must be highly collaborative, low ego and enjoy an environment where everyone is willing to pitch in and be all hands on deck.

As the ideal candidate, you are a seasoned human resources leader, having led HR and communications functions for growing businesses with a large capital spend, and bring a strong drive for advancing business goals. You are confident in your ability to navigate complex decision-making at the board table, but equally comfortable rolling up your sleeves and diving into the details. You are known for your humility and others would describe you as grounded, approachable and genuine.

Key qualities and experience :

  • A people-person, you are known as a culture-creator and know how crucial living a value-based culture is to attracting, engaging and retaining a great team.
  • Ability to clearly articulate a position and take guidance from a board, all in the mindset of continuous improvement.
  • Methodical and systems-oriented, ready to back up your ideas and initiatives with strong plans tied to business goals.
  • Ideally, you have been around the board table of complex publicly traded or private companies.
