Job description

What will you do?
  1. Use effective teaching style for training and mentoring senior Underwriting resources on financial and reinsurance aspects of High Net Worth business.
  2. Complete risk assessments on larger and more complex cases with higher premiums and face amounts (between $5,000,000 and $10,000,000), with the ability to decline unacceptable risks.
  3. Complete classifications for life and critical illness, making effective use of full signing authority.
  4. Apply holistic underwriting expertise in all areas of underwriting including medical, financial, and lifestyle factors to make sound and competitive decisions.
  5. Perform referrals with the aim of mentoring senior underwriters.
  6. Provide full explanations for all decisions and inquiries.
  7. Meet with Advisors and Firms, and deliver presentations supporting SLF Underwriting philosophies.
  8. Take a leadership role in identifying challenges and proposing solutions through our Brighter Way program.
  9. Maintain a client and results-focused approach, using a proactive service orientation.
  10. Support our Distribution partners.
What do you need to succeed?
  1. Bilingualism (French and English, both oral and written) is required for interactions with colleagues and partners across Canada and worldwide; reporting to a unilingual English-speaking manager outside Quebec.
  2. Excellent technical underwriting skills with a minimum of 7 to 10 years of underwriting experience.
  3. Ability to make appropriate risk assessment decisions in accordance with SLF guidelines and within signing authority.
  4. AALU designation and working towards the FALU designation.
  5. Demonstrated leadership supporting change and acting as a change agent.
  6. Exceptional reinsurance negotiating skills.
  7. Empathy and finesse to promote positive interactions.
  8. Awareness of trends in medicine and initiative to recommend improvements.
  9. Ability to build partnerships with advisors and wholesalers.
