Partner Company in Canada seeks a Senior Underwriter to develop tailored insurance solutions for mid-market clients. Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting experience.
  • Underwriting disciplines, risk assessment, coverage considerations, pricing models.
  • Completed or actively pursuing CIP, FCIP, or RPLU designation.
  • Leadership experience in coaching or mentoring is a plus.
  • Strong customer service and relationship-building capabilities.
  • Analytical thinking with ability to handle complex information.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Underwriter based in Canada.

This is a senior commercial underwriting opportunity focused on developing tailored insurance solutions for mid-market business clients. You will apply broad Property & Casualty underwriting expertise across areas such as property, casualty, commercial auto, and fleet risks. The role combines technical underwriting, pricing analysis, negotiation, and relationship management in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. You will work closely with Commercial Insurance Specialists and cross-functional partners in Actuarial and Claims to develop effective solutions for complex risks. Strong attention to detail and sound commercial judgment will be essential when assessing risk and designing appropriate coverage. The position also provides opportunities to coach and mentor colleagues while contributing to a high-performing underwriting culture. This is a hybrid, full-time opportunity based in Calgary, Alberta, with flexibility to work from home up to two days per week.


Accountabilities:
  • Commercial Underwriting: Assess and underwrite mid-market Commercial Property & Casualty risks, developing customized insurance solutions across property, casualty, commercial auto, fleet, and related lines.
  • Risk Assessment and Pricing: Apply broad underwriting knowledge and pricing principles to evaluate exposures, determine appropriate terms and conditions, and support sound portfolio decisions.
  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong professional relationships with Commercial Insurance Specialists, providing responsive communication and a high-quality underwriting experience.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Actuarial, Claims, and other internal stakeholders to evaluate risks, develop solutions, and ensure underwriting decisions are supported by relevant technical expertise.
  • Negotiation: Use strong negotiation and influencing skills to reach effective outcomes while balancing customer needs, risk considerations, pricing, and business objectives.
  • Problem Solving: Analyze complex underwriting situations, identify risks and opportunities, and develop practical solutions in a dynamic commercial environment.
  • Customer Service: Maintain a strong service orientation and respond promptly to internal and external stakeholders while ensuring accuracy and professionalism throughout the underwriting process.
  • Coaching and Mentorship: Support the development of colleagues through coaching, knowledge sharing, and mentorship, contributing to the growth of underwriting capabilities across the team.
  • Underwriting Excellence: Maintain strong attention to detail and consistently apply underwriting disciplines, policies, pricing models, and best practices to support profitable and sustainable business outcomes.
Requirements
  • Professional Experience: 5+ years of experience in Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting, with demonstrated ability to assess and manage a broad range of commercial risks.
  • Underwriting Expertise: Strong knowledge and understanding of commercial underwriting disciplines, risk assessment practices, coverage considerations, and pricing models.
  • Professional Designations: Completed or actively pursuing a CIP, FCIP, or RPLU designation.
  • Leadership Experience: Previous experience leading, coaching, or mentoring team members is considered an asset.
  • Customer Focus: Strong customer service background with the ability to build trusted, professional relationships and deliver a responsive underwriting experience.
  • Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking capabilities, with the ability to evaluate complex information and make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Negotiation Skills: Strong negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to balance commercial objectives, customer needs, and risk considerations.
  • Relationship Building: Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with internal partners and other stakeholders.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and managing multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and quality.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain underwriting decisions, recommendations, and solutions.
  • Team Development: A collaborative mindset and willingness to support colleagues through coaching, mentorship, and knowledge sharing.
