Senior Transmission Line Engineer

Kosmos Group is a leading multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm specializing in power transmission and distribution. We provide services to utility companies, consultants, and contractors involved in designing and constructing power facilities, transmission lines, and substations across the United States and Canada. Our offerings include feasibility studies, full engineering design, and as-built documentation.

Our Transmission Engineering team seeks a Transmission Line Engineer to support our expanding Transmission & Distribution practice in Calgary. This hybrid role involves working both in-office and remotely. The successful candidate will be engaged in all aspects of transmission line routing and design.

Responsibilities

  1. Plan, analyze, and design transmission line projects primarily for utilities, involving multiple stakeholders.
  2. Report to a Project Engineer or Project Manager, focusing on project planning, analysis, and design.
  3. Understand project scope and deliverables, identify scope creep, and coordinate with project leadership to address issues.
  4. Coordinate with engineers, technical staff, equipment vendors, clients, and other design disciplines.
  5. Lead meetings with clients, stakeholders, and contractors to review project needs and field conditions.
  6. Obtain necessary project approvals from relevant agencies.
  7. Research issues affecting transmission line projects.
  8. Write and edit technical reports and engineering studies.
  9. Prepare plans, specifications, and design packages.
  10. Create technical presentations and drawings.
  11. Conduct detailed studies, plan reviews, and modeling tasks using tools like PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER, and PLS-POLE.
  12. Support construction through site visits, observation, and responding to RFIs.
  13. Act as liaison between engineering and construction teams.
  14. Ensure design practices comply with company standards and act as a focal point for discipline team members.
  15. Coordinate peer reviews and third-party quality reviews of deliverables.
  16. Perform quality reviews of transmission projects.
  17. Assist in preparing proposals, including scope and man-hour estimates.
  18. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
  19. Certify designs and drawings, serving as Engineer of Record (EOR).

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  2. Master’s degree preferred.
  3. Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
  4. Experience as a technical lead and in performing quality reviews.
  5. Professional Engineer licensure.
  6. Experience with 69kV to 500kV line design and knowledge of Power Line software (e.g., PLS, PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE).
  7. Advanced proficiency in PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER.
  8. Knowledge of GO95, NESC, and Wildfire Mitigation is a plus.
  9. Strong skills in design, calculations, and software execution.
  10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  11. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  12. Ability to travel as needed.
