Job description

Job Title: Senior Staff Accountant - Compilation & Tax

Company: Chase Sekulich Inc.
Location: Campbell River, BC (On-site / Hybrid Flexible)
Compensation: $65,000 - $90,000 per annum (Commensurate with experience)

About Us

We are a respected Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) firm serving the North Island for over 50 years. We are always looking for the right person to join our team at Chase Sekulich Inc. Earn competitive pay and benefits with flexible and balanced hours working with a diverse group of long-standing clients in beautiful Campbell River, BC. Located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, Campbell River is a great place to live, in a region that boasts a seemingly endless number of activities and amenities for retirees, families and young professionals.

We are seeking a self-driven, senior-level professional with strong full-cycle accounting skills and an upbeat attitude for diverse assignments. Ideal candidates possess high attention to detail, a focus on quality, and the capability to manage complex accounting tasks and file deadlines independently. We care about the work we do for our clients, knowing that high-quality standards lead to efficient engagements and the ability to meet our clients' ever-changing needs.

We believe that a rewarding career in accounting shouldn't come at the expense of your personal life. While traditional firms may demand grueling 50 to 60-hour weeks, we have built a sustainable, lifestyle-first firm culture, allowing our team to truly enjoy everything the North Island lifestyle has to offer.

Why This Role is Different: Work-Life Balance That Exists

Enjoy a true 35-hour work week (7 hours/day) for 10 months of the year. Busy season is kept manageable, with a minimum of just 40 hours per week (8 hours/day) during March and April. The Result: You may work roughly 6 to 7 weeks less per year than peers at traditional public firms, while earning a highly competitive, stable annual salary.

Responsibilities
  • Advanced Compilation Engagements: Independently lead and prepare complex year-end compilation engagements in CaseWare program, including adjusting entries, complex structures, supporting working papers, and financial statements.
  • Corporate, Personal & Trust Tax: Prepare and finalize corporate (T2), complex personal (T1), and estate/trust (T3) income tax returns in CCH iFirm Taxprep.
  • File Review & Quality Control: Perform initial review of files and bookkeeping completed by junior staff or bookkeeping team members to ensure firm quality standards are met.
  • Complex Bookkeeping Oversight: Oversee complex bookkeeping files, including account summaries, reconciliations, payroll structure, and intricate GST/PST calculations or reporting.
  • CRA & Government Navigation: Complete advanced government information requests, voluntary disclosures, and represent clients during audits or disputes.
  • Direct Client Advisory: Manage day-to-day client communication independently to gather information, answer accounting and tax queries, and proactively resolve discrepancies.
  • Deadline Management: Effectively prioritize workloads to ensure both monthly compliance and annual client tax deadlines are consistently met.
Qualifications
  • Experience: A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years' experience specifically within a Canadian public practice accounting firm environment is required.
  • Education: Post-secondary education in accounting is required (Diploma or Degree).
  • CPA Status: Designated CPAs, final-stage CFE writers, or highly experienced un-designated senior accounting technicians with a strong career history in public practice are all highly encouraged to apply.
  • Technical Mastery: Proven ability to completely and independently assemble complex compilation files and clear advanced tax issues.
  • Software Competency: Direct, practical experience using CaseWare and CCH iFirm Taxprep (or equivalent professional public practice tax suites) is highly preferred.
  • Leadership & Organization: Strong self-motivation with the ability to manage multiple tasks, guide workflows, and meet firm deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills for managing client and team relationships.
  • Availability: Available to work the standard busy season schedule (minimum 40 hours/week) during March and April, with the probability of some overtime.
This position offers:
  • A standard 35-hour work week for 10 months of the year (will consider part-time arrangements for the right senior candidate).
  • Paid overtime or time off in lieu of overtime, typically only required during March/April tax season.
  • Full support for those finalizing their CPA (module fees and paid exam leave).
  • Payment of annual professional dues.
  • Continued professional development.
  • Workplace flexibility (both on-site and hybrid work opportunities).
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • On-site parking.
