We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an automation-focused senior technologist passionate about Linux, eager to build a career with Canonical, and to drive success for those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, serving over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops engineer, you will lead operations automation, enhancing our private and public cloud infrastructure using open source tools, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical's automation products. You will also provide feedback to developers on product operations at scale, contributing to bug reports, pull requests, and collaborative design efforts.

You will join a global team of SREs supporting services for Canonical, its customers, and the Ubuntu community.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation and Gitops initiatives as an embedded tech lead
• Collaborate with IS architect to align solutions with architecture vision
• Design and develop services as products for internal use
• Advance Infrastructure as Code practices, increasing automation and process efficiency
• Automate software operations across clouds, considering distributed system complexities
• Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure
• Develop troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance skills; set up observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch
• Support and collaborate with globally distributed teams
• Focus on larger automation projects with dedicated development time
• Share expertise through design sessions and mentorship
• Handle time-critical escalations

Candidate Profile

• Strong understanding of hosting architecture driven by Infrastructure as Code
• Product mindset focused on developing products over solutions
• Proficient in Python, with experience managing large projects
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration
• Proven ability to deploy cloud infrastructure with code
• Knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls
• Experience with Linux storage solutions like Ceph or databases
• Hands-on Linux server administration
• Deep knowledge of cloud computing technologies
• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field
• Effective communication skills in English
• Strong troubleshooting skills, kernel to web
• Flexible, quick learner, and adaptable to fast-changing environments
• Comfortable working in distributed teams
• Passionate about open-source, especially Ubuntu or Debian
