Job summary

Northumberland Ferries Limited is seeking a Deputy Director of Safety and Security to lead the development and maintenance of the Safety Management System (SMS) across vessels, terminals and facilities. You will oversee safety initiatives, audits, and regulatory compliance with shore and marine teams.

The role requires experience in marine safety, risk assessments and incident investigations, plus strong communication and leadership to guide cross-functional teams and improve safety culture

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the ISM Code, SMS practices and applicable marine safety and health requirements.
• Experience with operational audits, incident investigations and corrective actions in a regulated marine environment.
• Clear written and verbal communication with vessel and shore personnel; ability to resolve complex issues.

Responsibilities

• Support and improve the SMS and safety culture across vessels and shore operations.
• Provide leadership to safety and security personnel and project teams.
• Conduct risk assessments, hazard analyses and security assessments with mitigations.
• Plan and support internal and external audits and regulatory inspections; follow up on corrective actions.
• Support incident reporting and investigations; analyze trends and recommend improvements.
• Address vessel and facility security plans, drills, and cybersecurity matters as needed.
• Collaborate with managers to strengthen health and safety practices and training.
• Monitor regulatory compliance and communicate with regulators and classification societies.
• Prepare safety and security reports, audits and annual safety plans and budget inputs.
• Act for the Director on specified matters when delegated.
