Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a senior BI professional to migrate Cognos reports to Power BI and design modern BI solutions. You will transform data using SQL, Power Query, and DAX, and develop dashboards, semantic models, and paginated reports.

The role involves collaborating with stakeholders, validating results, and ensuring secure, scalable reporting aligned with our data architecture in a Canada-based environment.

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Business, Computer Science, MIS, Data Analytics, Finance, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of 7 years of experience in BI, reporting, analytics, or large-scale analytics in enterprise platforms such as Cognos, Tableau, Power BI, or similar
Experience working with Microsoft Fabric
Experience developing Power BI reports, dashboards, semantic models, or paginated reports
Experience migrating Cognos Analytics to Power BI, including Report Studio, Framework Manager, Cognos packages, prompts, and audit/usage analysis
Strong SQL skills
Experience with relational databases, data marts, data warehouses, or enterprise data platforms
Ability to gather requirements, document business logic, validate results, and communicate findings to technical and business audiences
Experience supporting report testing, reconciliation, defect resolution, and stakeholder sign-off
Candidates must be able to work legally in Canada at the time of application; Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents preferred
Must meet requisite government security screening requirements

Responsibilities

Analyze existing Cognos reports, packages, queries, prompts, calculations, filters, security requirements, and usage patterns to determine migration scope and complexity
Work with business stakeholders to confirm reporting requirements and identify redundant or low-value reports
Recommend opportunities for report consolidation, redesign, or retirement
Document report logic, data sources, field mappings, layouts, dependencies, and business rules
Design and develop Power BI reports, dashboards, paginated reports, and semantic models
Transform and validate data using SQL, Power Query, DAX, and approved enterprise data sources
Support user acceptance testing and reconcile results between Cognos and Power BI
Investigate variances and document testing outcomes
Collaborate with data engineering, architecture, governance, and platform teams
Ensure reports are secure, performant, maintainable, and aligned with target data architecture
Prepare report inventory updates, technical documentation, user guidance, and knowledge-transfer materials
Contribute to migration planning, backlog refinement, prioritization, status reporting, and issue/risk tracking
Support production deployment, post-implementation validation, and transition of migrated reports into ongoing support

Requirements

Minimum of 7 years of experience in business intelligence, reporting, analytics, or developing large-scale reporting/analytics in enterprise analytics platforms such as Cognos, Tableau, Power BI, or similar
Experience working with Microsoft Fabric
Experience developing Power BI reports, dashboards, semantic models, or paginated reports
Experience analyzing, reverse engineering, or migrating reports from IBM Cognos Analytics to Power BI, including Report Studio, Framework Manager, Cognos packages, prompts, and audit/usage analysis
Strong SQL skills
