Jobtailor in Ottawa is seeking a senior BI professional to lead the migration of Cognos reporting assets to Power BI, redesigning data models and ensuring governance and performance. You will collaborate with business users, data teams and platform partners to document logic, validate mappings and deliver scalable reports and semantic models across an enterprise.

Qualifications

7+ years in BI, reporting and data analytics for enterprise platforms.
Experience developing reports, dashboards and semantic models in Power BI.
Experience migrating reports from Cognos to Power BI.

Ability to gather requirements and communicate findings clearly.

Responsibilities

Assess, streamline, redesign and rebuild Cognos reporting assets in Power BI.
Collaborate with business users, data teams, technology partners and reporting leads.
Identify current reporting needs and document data and business logic.
Validate source-to-target mappings.
Create Power BI reports and semantic models that comply with governance standards.
Analyze Cognos reports, folders, queries, calculations, filters, security requirements and usage patterns.
Identify redundant or low-value reports and recommend consolidation, redesign or retirement.
Document logic, layouts, data sources, mappings, dependencies and business rules.
Design reports, dashboards, paginated reports and semantic models in Power BI.
Transform and validate data using SQL, Power Query, DAX and approved data sources.
Support user acceptance testing, reconcile Cognos and Power BI, analyze variances and document results.
Collaborate with data engineering, architecture, governance and platform teams.
Prepare inventory updates, technical documentation, user guides and knowledge transfer materials.
Contribute to migration planning, prioritization, status reporting, and issue and risk tracking.
Support production deployment, post-implementation validation and transition to ongoing support.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, management information systems, data analytics, finance or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
At least 7 years of experience in business intelligence, reporting and data analytics, including developing large-scale reporting or analytics solutions on enterprise analytics platforms such as Cognos, Tableau or Power BI
Experience developing reports, dashboards, semantic models or paginated reports in Power BI
Experience with Microsoft Fabric
Experience analyzing, reverse-engineering or migrating reports from IBM Cognos Analytics to Power BI
Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases, data marts, data warehouses or enterprise data platforms
Proven ability to gather requirements, document business logic, validate results and communicate findings to technical and business audiences
Experience supporting report testing, reconciliation, defect resolution and stakeholder sign-off
Candidates must meet government security requirements
Preference will be given to candidates legally authorized to work in Canada at the time of application
Assets: experience in financial services, banking or insurance; data governance; metadata; lineage; report inventory management; Azure DevOps; Agile methodologies; proficiency in both official languages
