Alberta Infrastructure designs, builds, manages and maintains government-owned and operated facilities, and collaborates with other ministries to ensure that schools, hospitals and government facilities infrastructure meet the needs of Alberta’s population. The Ministry also provides accommodation services and manages a large portfolio of owned and leased facilities while maintaining fiscal accountability and optimizing value for Albertans.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the P3 Project Delivery Director within the Learning Facilities Branch, the Senior Project Manager has the overall responsibility and accountability for the delivery of safe, functional, high quality cost effective, sustainable facilities that meet Alberta Education and school jurisdiction program delivery needs. This position is the “go-to” person for all issues/challenges related to the capital projects they manage and ensures projects are delivered on time, budget and scope. The projects range in size and complexity from elementary grade levels to complex high schools with community partnership components, consisting of multiple schools in a DBFM (Design Build Finance Maintain) procurement model.

The Senior Project Manager works closely with client representatives from Alberta Education, school jurisdictions and municipality representatives throughout all aspects of a project, from inception to the end of warranty period. The Senior Project Manager is responsible for design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and warranty management of approved learning facility projects.

The primary responsilibities for the Senior Project Manager includes, but are not limited to:

  • Leading and managing learning facility projects by ensuring all aspects of execution, control, monitoring and closure for assigned capital project(s)
  • Ensuring project scope is met, accurately reflecting Alberta Education and the school jurisdiction’s requirements and the infrastructure that will be required to support these requirements.The Alberta and National Building Codes, as well as Infrastructure’s technical standards are utilized as key resources for scope documentation
  • Overseeing projects to ensure it is well organized and structured for communication and decision making. A complete and accurate list of resources required for project planning, design and implementation is established, and the project teams are organized for working groups, steering groups, and potentially deputy minister’s committees
  • Ensuring risk is closely managed and mitigation strategies are established and implemented for identified risks
  • Establishing and maintaining a network of relationships to influence decision making affecting project outcomes
  • Mentoring, coaching and developing staff and identifies developmental opportunities to develop and maintain a high level of service.

Qualifications

Required

  • University Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field
  • 6 years of progressively related work experience in building design and construction including 5 years of project management, contract management, and managing interdisciplinary teams and resources
  • Experience in project management of school facilities.

Equivalency Is As Follows

  • One year of education for one year of experience or one year of experience for one year of education.

Assets

  • Eligibility for membership or current membership in good standing with any of the following: AAA – Alberta Association of Architects, APEGA - Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, ASET - Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta, PMI – Project Management Institute
  • PMP – Project Management Professional
  • Experience in building design and construction
  • Experience with contract management.
