Job summary

Suncor in St. John's, NL, is seeking a Project Engineer to lead sustaining capital projects for the Terra Nova asset, focusing on topsides upgrades and offshore work. You will partner with Engineering, Procurement, and Operations to deliver safe, compliant projects and drive asset integrity.

The role requires 5–7 years in project engineering or management, a engineering degree, and registration eligibility. Occasional offshore travel is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an accredited engineering technology diploma with eligibility for professional registration.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of related experience, preferably in petro-chemical/oil and gas.
  • Familiarity with project management systems and controls; PMP certification is a plus.
  • Progressive experience in project engineering and/or project management.
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders on technical and project decisions.
  • Experience with industry-standard project delivery models, EH&S, cost control and document control.
  • Knowledge of offshore production facilities (topsides/subsea) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of industry codes, company standards and safety policies is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and issue third party scope of work documentation to support assigned projects.
  • Kick-off, manage and deliver engineering projects through a gated delivery model.
  • Interface with Terra Nova EPF contractors and coordinate delivery and approval of project documentation.
  • Provide project stewardship to Suncor leadership against KPI metrics.
  • Coordinate with other units and external third parties to support planning, delivery and execution.
  • Coordinate review of EPF contractor documentation through peer reviews, risk assessments and readiness reviews.
  • Collaborate with Operations & Maintenance for offshore execution of project work.
  • Prepare and present gate packages for Project Gate Reviews and approvals.

The Project Engineer provides leadership and technical oversight for sustaining capital projects that support the continued safe and efficient operation of the Terra Nova asset. Managing projects through the Develop & Manage Projects process, this role partners with Engineering, Maintenance & Reliability, and Operations stakeholders to deliver topsides upgrades, modifications, and replacement initiatives that address regulatory requirements, improve asset integrity, and mitigate operational risks in alignment with Terra Nova's Strategic Asset Management Plan.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an accredited Engineering Technology diploma. Eligible for professional registration or certification with PEGNL or ASETNL.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of related experience is required, with a preference for experience in petro-chemical/oil and gas industry
  • Familiarity with project management systems and controls and/or Professional Certification (PMP, etc.) would be considered an asset
  • Relevant and progressive experience in Project Engineering and/or Project Management would be considered an asset
  • Ability to collaborate with and influence various internal and external stakeholders on technical & project decisions, is required
  • Demonstrated experience with adhering to industry standard project delivery models and associated project management systems such as EH&S, cost control, planning, quality, document control and management of change
  • Experience and knowledge of the design, maintenance, and operating principles for offshore production facilities (topsides and/or subsea) is preferred
  • Demonstrable knowledge of industry codes & standards, company standards / best practices, and safety policies is preferred
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and issue third party scope of work documentation, as required, to support the assigned projects.
  • Kick-off, manage and deliver engineering projects required to progress through a gated project delivery model
  • Act as primary interface with Terra Nova’s Engineering, Procurement, Fabrication (EPF) contractor(s) and coordinate delivery and review & approval of project documentation with Suncor Subject Matter Experts, as required
  • Manage and provide project stewardship to Suncor leadership pertaining to assigned projects against relevant KPI metrics
  • Interface and coordinate with other business unit functions and external third parties to support the planning, delivery and execution of the assigned projects.
  • Coordinate the review of project documentation delivered by the EPF contractor(s) in a timely manner as part of various engineering peer reviews, risk assessments/analysis, action closures and readiness reviews from project initiation through closeout.
  • Effectively collaborate with Operations & Maintenance teams to ensure efficient offshore execution of project work.
  • Prepare, coordinate and present project gate packages, following Suncor best practice templates, for assigned Project Gate Reviews and associated Gatekeeper approvals.
Location and other Key Details:
  • You will work out of the Suncor Centre Offices located at 130 Kelsey Drive, St. John's, Newfoundland
  • Primarily office work, but will include offshore travel (2-3 times per year) by helicopter to Terra Nova FPSO
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • Possible business travel to other locations would be required
