Job summary

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is seeking a Senior Engineer, Model Validation to review and validate power system models and PDUPs. You will be a subject matter expert and provide coaching and mentoring through internal training, creating guidelines, checklists and streamlining processes.

Qualifications

• B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
• Registered with or eligible to be registered with APEGA (P.Eng.).
• 10+ years of engineering experience in the electric utility industry, focused on power system models and analysis, PDUP creation, review and validation.
• Additional experience in transmission planning, power system operations and customer access studies is an asset.
• Understanding of Alberta's electricity regulatory framework, AESO Tariff, reliability standards, and transmission facilities.
• Proficiency in power system study tools, especially PSSE for steady state, dynamic and EM transient studies.
• Experience in developing/validating models for EM Transient and Phasor domain simulations is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Lead independent technical reviews and validation of project models used in power system studies.
• Validate model logic, assumptions, data sources, methodologies and results for accuracy and robustness.
• Review generator, plant and network static and dynamic models, including parameterization and control representations.
• Validate line impedances, thermal ratings, transformer parameters, bus configurations and protection interfaces.
• Assess model convergences, numerical stability, and sensitivity to parameter variations.
• Interpret modeling results and communicate implications, risks, and uncertainties to market participants.
• Identify and mitigate model risk and escalate issues.
• Establish structured model validation frameworks, checklists and peer-review protocols.
• Support development and validation of interconnection studies cases.
• Mentor other engineers and disseminate best practices.
