Job summary

CFIB in Calgary is seeking a Senior Policy Analyst to develop and coordinate legislative, research and communications activities for policy issues affecting small businesses.

You will work with colleagues across Canada in a hybrid role combining home and office work, with a focus on Alberta and Western Canada, shaping CFIB’s policy directions and public messaging.

Qualifications

  • Experience in public policy, research, economic or legislative environments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication; ability to prepare complex materials for diverse audiences.
  • Understanding of the small business sector and Canadian economy; interest in government/politics.
  • Strong analytical and research skills to shape CFIB’s Legislative Affairs agenda.
  • Commitment to accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Experience with media relations an asset.

We are looking for a Senior Policy Analyst in Calgary!

We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time position as a Senior Policy Analyst. This position will be in Calgary in a hybrid work arrangement (from home and from our Calgary office).

What will you do?

Reporting to the Senior Director, Alberta & Interprovincial Affairs, you will be responsible for the development and coordination of legislative, research and communications activities for policy issues affecting CFIB members in Manitoba.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare written communications - letters, briefs, reports, presentations, among others - reflecting research results and CFIB positions.
  • Represent CFIB in lobbying efforts and at various government and external meetings.
  • Stay informed on pertinent legislation, economic trends, and government policy developments, determining their relevancy to CFIB’s policy directions.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research and analysis on public policy issues of relevance to small business, with an emphasis on tax policy, public finances, regulatory policy, labour and social policy.
  • Act as a media spokesperson, ensuring CFIB policy positions and the voices of small businesses are heard.
  • Assist with responding to inquiries from small business owners with timely and accurate information.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Canada to develop and contribute to the development of internal and external communications to CFIB members and the media including online and social media channels.
What makes a successful Senior Policy Analyst?
  • Superior written and oral communication as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to write news releases, reports, briefs and prepare highly complex material for presentations to employees, members, media, the public as well as to government and other interest groups.
  • Experience in public policy, research, economic or legislative environments.
  • Understanding of the small business sector and its role in the Canadian economy, as well as an interest in government relations/politics/public policy. A preference will be given to those candidates with an understanding of the political and small business landscapes in Alberta and/or western Canada.
  • Strong analytical and research skills to help shape CFIB’s Legislative Affairs agenda.
  • Commitment to accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Expertise in word processing, spreadsheets, and graphic packages.
  • Work well interdependently in a collaborative environment with crossfunctional colleagues.
  • Work effectively to meet tight and shifting deadlines.
  • Ability to use good judgment in dealings with all contacts to maintain the professional image of CFIB.
  • Experience with media relations an asset.
