Job summary

Job description

Senior Pharmacy Technician, Primary Care

NHS Fife has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our Primary Care Pharmacy Team.

Based at Stratheden Hospital, Cupar, this role is undertaken primarily within the 11 GP practices across North East Fife. The successful candidate will support the delivery and ongoing development of safe, effective and person‑centred pharmacotherapy services, working directly with GP practice teams, patients and other health and care professionals.

Regular travel between GP practices, including travel between locations during the working day, is an essential part of this role. Applicants must be able to demonstrate how they will travel independently, reliably and efficiently between the 11 GP practices to meet the operational requirements of the service.

Applicants must also have post‑registration experience working specifically within a Primary Care GP General Practice setting. Although experience gained within community pharmacy is valuable, community pharmacy experience alone will not meet this essential requirement. The successful candidate must already have relevant practical experience of working directly within General Practice systems, processes and multidisciplinary teams.

The Role

Duties

• Undertaking medicines reconciliation following hospital discharge, outpatient appointments, new patient registrations and other transitions of care.
• Reviewing and processing acute prescription requests within agreed protocols and your individual scope of competence.
• Supporting serial prescribing processes and reviewing Treatment Summary Reviews.
• Undertaking medication and adherence reviews for identified patient groups.
• Responding to medicines‑related queries from patients, carers, GP practice staff, community pharmacies, care homes and other health and care professionals.
• Supporting prescribing audits, medicines efficiency work and agreed service improvement projects.
• Providing advice and recommendations to support the safe, effective and efficient use of medicines.
• Liaising with GP practice teams, community pharmacies, hospital colleagues, care homes and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Undertaking face‑to‑face reviews within GP practices and, where required, patients’ homes.
• Contributing to the development and review of standard operating procedures, guidance documents and consistent working practices across the service.

Leadership and Staff Development

The role may also include line management responsibilities, depending on the requirements of the service. You will help to maintain high and consistent standards of practice, support staff development and contribute to induction, training, mentoring and service improvement activity.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Pharmacy Technician who:

• Can work confidently, accurately and independently within GP General Practice.
• Has a good understanding of General Practice prescribing systems and medicines management processes.
• Can organise and prioritise a varied workload across multiple practice locations.
• Can communicate effectively with patients, carers, GP practice teams and other health and care professionals.
• Has a strong organisational, interpersonal, problem‑solving and decision‑making skill.
• Can support, train and develop other members of the pharmacy team.
• Is adaptable and able to respond positively to changing service needs.
• Is committed to continuing professional development and the delivery of high‑quality, person‑centered care.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must:

• Be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a practicing Pharmacy Technician.
• Hold an NC in Pharmaceutical Science and SVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
• Hold a recognised Pharmacy Technician Accuracy Checking qualification.
• Hold the PDA in the Assessment and Supply of Individual Patients’ Medicines, an equivalent qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent relevant experience.
• Hold, or be willing to work towards, an appropriate further clinical qualification at SCQF Level 7 or 8.
• Have post‑registration experience working specifically within a Primary Care GP General Practice setting.
• Have experience of supporting, training or mentoring staff.
• Be able to travel independently, reliably and efficiently between the 11 GP practices across North East Fife, including travel between locations during the working day. Candidates will be required to demonstrate how they will meet this essential requirement.
