Job summary

City of Peterborough is seeking a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer III to enforce property standards, building code compliance, and related by-laws across municipal housing and properties. The role includes investigations, issuing orders, prosecution support, and cross-functional coordination with Building Services.

The successful candidate will have a two-year college diploma in civil/architectural tech or equivalent, plus multiple years of Ontario offences enforcement experience,

Qualifications

• Two-year college diploma in Civil/Architectural Technician or Technologist or equivalent construction trade.
• Combination of three years’ experience in Ontario Provincial Offences Act enforcement and prosecution.

Responsibilities

• Ensure residential properties comply with Minimum Property Standards By-law, Property Maintenance By-law, Ontario Building Code and related by-laws.
• Interpret and enforce by-laws; obtain compliance through persuasion, orders and/or legal action; prepare final verifications.
• Verify buildings comply with approved plans; inspect, issue notices, and prepare documentation for legal action as needed.
• Hire/co-ordinate contractors for remedial work and supervise their progress; assist with invoices.
• Represent the City in court and before the Property Standards Committee; swear information and liaise with Solicitor’s Office on penalties.
• Provide coverage for MLEO Level II/I and assist with related enforcement responsibilities within the division.
• Determine when property standards issues require OBC review; liaise with Building Services for joint involvement.
• Prepare and maintain daily/monthly inspection reports; update property records in municipal databases.
• Develop public education materials for print and online to promote enforcement program knowledge.
