Job summary

Design Works Engineering is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead our Edmonton mechanical team. You will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and deliver high‑quality building services designs across projects.

This role focuses on coordinating with project managers and clients, reviewing drawings, and ensuring code compliance while driving standardization and growth across Alberta and Canada.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering required.
• Minimum 5 years of experience designing mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, and multi‑family projects.
• P.Eng designation with APEGA in good standing required.
• Proven experience in a senior or lead mechanical role including mentorship and technical oversight.
• Strong knowledge of building codes, standards, and best practices.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills for client and team coordination.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office.
• Fluency in English (spoken and written).

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical scope through all project phases, ensuring codes, budgets, schedules, and client requirements.
• Act as technical authority for Mechanical Building Services systems (heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing, controls).
• Oversee preparation, review, and approval of drawings, specifications, and design docs.
• Perform and review load calculations using HAP or similar software.
• Mentor intermediate and junior mechanical engineers and designers.
• Establish and improve internal mechanical standards, procedures, and QC practices.
• Review client specs, shop drawings, and contractor submissions for design intent and codes.
• Prepare and review technical reports and analyses for submissions and permits.
• Collaborate with project managers and cross-disciplinary teams for coordinated designs.
• Interface with clients, authorities, suppliers, and contractors as mechanical lead.
• Support proposals, fee estimates, and business development as needed.
• Conduct site visits and surveys to provide construction support.
