Job Description

SKILLS:

1. A working knowledge of common machine shop techniques.
2. Must have a thorough knowledge of drafting principles.
3. Must be proficient in AutoCAD and Solid Works.
4. Must be capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
5. Must be capable of working as part of a team.
6. A thorough knowledge of the use of pneumatics and hydraulics.
7. A thorough knowledge of the use of electrical devices (i.e. switches, load cells, LVDT’s, etc.).
8. Must be capable of giving and taking direction.
9. Must demonstrate a strong ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design requirements.
10. Must have strong written and oral communication abilities.
11. Able to independently complete all specific responsibilities with minimal supervision.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
2. Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness, etc. in the development of equipment, processes, and products.
3. Examine feasibility of using one or more machines to carry out sequential operations.
4. Produce working drawings, detail drawings, and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies, or product, using AutoCAD and Solid Works.
5. Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable standards (i.e. OSHA, CE or customer specific).
6. Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.
7. Strictly follow CSA N285/NQA Quality requirements as defined within the manual and procedures.
8. Will liaise with customers and in-house technical and engineering staff.
9. Will liaise with vendors for technical information and specifications.
10. Communicate all requested design changes to their Mechanical Design Group Leader.
11. Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
12. Adhere to all ISO procedures pertaining to the job responsibilities.
13. Responsible for communicating progress on tasks to supervising designer.
14. Will periodically assist with the Group Leader’s responsibilities during their absence.
15. Will periodically supervise the mechanical design effort on a project level delegating tasks to a team of people.
16. Organize documentation, including quotes, drawing registers, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, etc. on projects you are supervising.
17. Review electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
18. Review machine operations and machine sequences with programmers.
19. Assist the fabricators, machinists, toolmaker, and electricians in the debug, integration resolving problems and completion of systems.
20. Determine tools, fixtures, and equipment to be used in fabrication and assembly of mechanical components and complete assemblies.
21. Select appropriate purchase components for mechanical assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.

Additional Information

Education:

A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

Experience:

A minimum of 10 years’ Mechanical Design experience with expertise within an Automation design environment (designs utilizing pneumatics, valves, servos, mechanisms, etc).
