Job summary

SmartSkin Technologies in Fredericton, NB is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to own the mechanical design of container twins from concept through production. You will package electronics, consider board outlines, connectors, and thermal paths, and ensure IP-rated seals through CIP and wash-down cycles.

You will work closely with fabrication partners, mentor junior designers, and help specify materials, tolerances, and manufacturing methods.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of electromechanical product design and at least one brought to volume production.
• SolidWorks proficiency with experience modeling assemblies.
• Fluency in GD&T and tolerance stack-up.
• Experience designing for manufactures across CNC milling/turning, injection moulding, and 3D printing.
• Sealed enclosure design with consideration for ingress protection.
• Ability to explain a design decision clearly to teams, partners, and customers.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the assembly team on site and with external shops and moulders.

Getting it right is a mechanical challenge that your knowledge and skills will help to find a solution for. Our products are required to match the real container’s outside geometry, weight, and centre of gravity close enough that the production line cannot tell the difference. Inside, you will need to fit sensors, batteries, and cables to make it work.

As the Senior Mechanical Designer, you will be responsible for ensuring that our products match the customer’s external specifications, all electronics can fit inside, it can be sealed to withstand wash-down chemistry, and it can ultimately survive thousands of runs. We have over 400 unique container twins in production today. The next ones could be yours.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the mechanical design of container twins and their accessories from first concept through to production parts.
• Package electronics into unique shapes and configurations, working with our electrical and firmware engineers on board outlines, connector placement, antenna keep-outs, and thermal paths.
• Design products for sealing and keeps IP-rated joints intact through CIP and wash-down cycles.
• Choose materials appropriate for the specific customer requirements including the use of food-contact and pharma-grade resins, ensuring chemical compatibility with cleaning agents, and providing customer facing documentation of materials.
• Produce the drawing package that lets someone else build the model including GD&T, tolerance stacks, BoMs, assembly procedures, and change control.
• Work with our assembly team on site and with external machine shops and moulders.
• Mentor junior designers.
• Work within a fast paced, team environment.

You will report to our Senior Lead, Mechanical, who has been building container twins for seven years. The team has a lot of hard-won product knowledge and is looking for someone who is willing to deeply learn our products and understand our customers' needs.

Qualifications & Experience

• 7+ years of electromechanical product design, and at least one you saw through to volume production.
• Deep SolidWorks skills including experience modeling assemblies.
• Fluency in GD&T and tolerance stack-up.
• Experience designing for manufactures across processes including CNC milling and turning, injection moulding, and 3D printing, and the judgement to know which process to use for each part.
• Experience with sealed enclosure design including accounting for compression and ingress protection.
• The ability to explain a design decision clearly to internal team members, external manufacturing partners, and customers.

Bonus Qualifications

• Experience with injection moulding tooling, including working with moulders on tool design.
• Experience with FEA for optimizing material and thickness decisions.
• Experience with food-contact or pharma materials: 21 CFR 177, USP Class VI, EU 10/2011.
• Experience with battery enclosure safety, or designing around antennas and RF keep-outs.
• Familiarity with regulated manufacturing documentation, GMP, or design history files.
• An engineering technology diploma.

This role is based in Fredericton and it is hands-on by nature. We are looking for someone who will be in office regularly, working alongside the team. Highly qualified candidates outside of the region will be considered, with the expectation of regular travel to the office.
