Job summary

ABCO seeks a Mechanical Designer to develop innovative, accurate, and cost-effective designs from concept through manufacturing and commissioning at the Lunenburg facility. The role collaborates with internal teams, fabrication shops, and customers to deliver high-quality solutions across ABCO’s four industries: food processing, marine, environmental, and industrial fabrication.

Candidates bring a diploma in mechanical design and 2+ years’ experience, with CAD proficiency (SolidWorks/AutoCAD).

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Design or related program required.
  • 2+ years mechanical design experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed mechanical designs, drawings, and BOMs for manufacturing.
  • Develop conceptual designs and assist with proposals and technical sales support.
  • Prepare project cost estimates and assist with budgeting.
  • Coordinate projects across departments to ensure alignment and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with fabrication teams to optimize manufacturability and production processes.
  • Perform quality checks to ensure designs meet standards.
  • Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance evaluation of installed equipment.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet deadlines, specifications, and cost targets.
  • Communicate effectively with customers during design, sales, and project execution phases.
  • Contribute to SOP development and continuous improvement.
  • Stay current with industry trends and manufacturing methods.
  • Provide support to other departments as needed.
  • Travel occasionally for site visits, commissioning, and customer support.

Job description

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for developing innovative, accurate, and cost-
effective mechanical designs from concept through manufacturing and commissioning.
This role works closely with internal teams, fabrication shops, and customers to deliver
high-quality solutions across ABCO’s four main industries: food processing, marine,
environmental, and industrial fabrication.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Create detailed mechanical designs, drawings, and bill of materials for manufacturing
  • Develop conceptual designs and assist with proposals and technical sales support
  • Prepare project cost estimates and assist with budgeting
  • Coordinate projects across departments to ensure alignment and efficiency
  • Collaborate with fabrication teams to optimize manufacturability and production
    processes
  • Perform quality checks to ensure designs meet company and customer standards
  • Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance evaluation of installed
    equipment
  • Ensure all deliverables meet deadlines, specifications, and cost targets

    phases
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of standard operating procedures
  • Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and manufacturing methods
  • Participate in team initiatives and continuous improvement efforts
  • Provide support to other departments as needed
  • Travel occasionally for site visits, commissioning, and customer support
Skills & Qualifications
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Design or related program required
  • 2 + years’ mechanical design experience required. We are looking for individuals
  • ofintermediate to seniorskill level.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with fabrication processes (welding, machining, forming, etc.)
  • Ability to produce and interpret detailed technical drawings
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)

Preferred:

  • Experience in industrial equipment, food machinery, marine, or custom fabrication.
Working Conditions

Work Location/ Schedule:
Full Time, Weekdays
In person @ 81 Tannery Rd, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Work Environment:
Office-based with regular interaction with fabrication and production teams. Occasional
travel may be required for customer meetings, site support, and commissioning.
