Job summary

Tandem Engineering Group in Windsor, ON is recruiting for a full-time Mechanical Engineer - HVAC / Building Systems with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience to support client projects in Windsor, Ontario. The role demands leadership on building mechanical designs, extensive knowledge of codes, and coordination across disciplines.

Candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, experience with AutoCAD and Revit, and strong communication and project management skills.

Qualifications

  • CET with relevant experience may be senior technologist track.
  • 7+ years of mechanical engineering design experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of building mechanical systems (HVAC, piping, etc.).
  • Provide senior technical leadership and mentorship to the team.
  • Coordinate multi-discipline projects and manage deadlines and budgets.
  • Oversee shop drawings, RFIs, and field observations to support project milestones.
  • Travel frequently to client sites as required.

Tandem is recruiting for a FULL-TIME POSITION as a Mechanical Engineer - HVAC / Building Systems with a minimum of 7+ years' experience to support our clients' projects in our WINDSOR, ON location.

Qualifications & Requirements:
Education & Professional Designation
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma with equivalent experience.
  • CET with extensive relevant experience may be considered for a senior technologist track.
Experience
  • Minimum 7-10 years of mechanical engineering design experience in building systems, including:
  • Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, boilers, hot water, chillers, chilled water, pumps, hydronic piping, ductwork layout, natural gas, plumbing, domestic water, sanitary piping, storm piping, and energy conservation initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of consulting engineering project phases: feasibility studies, schematic design, detailed design, construction documents, tendering, construction/administration, and project close-out.
  • Demonstrated experience designing for clients in educational, commercial, industrial, and healthcare markets.
  • Demonstrated senior-level involvement in construction project management, including coordination with contractors and other disciplines.
Codes, Standards & Specifications
  • Advanced knowledge of local and national codes and standards, including: OBC, NBC, ASHRAE, NFPA, CSA, ASPE, TSSA, etc.
  • Experience reading, developing, and editing project specifications (NMS, MS, etc.).
  • Good knowledge and understanding of mechanical systems building design, codes, and specifications, with the ability to interpret and apply them independently.
Software & Technical Skills
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and the Autodesk Suite.
  • Strong experience in Revit for building systems design; experience with BIM 360 is considered an asset.
  • Experience in selecting HVAC equipment and coordinating selections with manufacturers' representatives.
  • Experience in heating and cooling load calculations and with HAP, Trace, or similar load analysis software.
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and related programs.
Project & People Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, coordinate multi-discipline teams, and manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience preparing status reports, reviewing specifications and drawings, verifying contractor work, and managing project deadlines.
  • High level of analytical ability to solve unusual and complex mechanical design problems.
  • Sound management skills and enjoyment of working on the technical aspects of building design projects in a fast-paced, supportive, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Some experience in facilities operations and maintenance is an asset.
Soft Skills
  • High level of professional discipline, self-motivation, and integrity.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to communicate ideas and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical team members and clients.
  • Strong planning, organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
Building Mechanical Systems Design
  • Lead the design of building mechanical systems, including:
  • heating, ventilation, air conditioning, boilers, chilled water, hydronic systems, compressed air, natural gas, plumbing piping systems, fluid delivery systems, and energy conservation initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership on projects, ensuring designs meet performance, code, budget, and schedule requirements.
  • Oversee and review mechanical design work prepared by intermediate and junior team members, providing guidance and mentorship.
Technical Leadership & Innovation
  • Seek and apply new technology, tools, and methodologies to improve design efficiency, constructability, and lifecycle performance.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, engineering documents, and value engineering analyses.
  • Develop and maintain standards, guidelines, and best practices for mechanical design within the team.
  • Act as the primary mechanical engineering liaison with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with project scope and requirements.
  • Lead client meetings, design presentations, and design coordination sessions with other disciplines.
  • Provide senior-level technical consultation, including analyzing facility mechanical system problems in the field and recommending practical, cost-effective solutions.
Project & Scope Development
  • Lead the development of mechanical scope of work for new projects, including feasibility studies, owner reviews, and construction bid package development.
  • Support proposal and fee development for mechanical engineering services.
  • Provide input into project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation from a mechanical discipline perspective.
Construction Support & Administration
  • Oversee the shop drawing review process, responses to Requests for Information (RFIs), and preparation of field observation reports to ensure timely processing and alignment with project milestones.
  • Ensure that construction work is in compliance with mechanical plans, specifications, and applicable codes/standards.
  • Support commissioning activities and project close-out, including review of as-built documentation and operational issues.
  • Lead or oversee mechanical cost estimating for developed scopes of work for assigned projects.
  • Identify and recommend value engineering opportunities to improve project performance and reduce overall cost.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to intermediate and junior engineers and technologists.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, multi-disciplinary, team-based environment and help build internal mechanical engineering capabilities.
Travel
  • Frequent travel, including occasional international travel, to client sites and facilities as required.
