Job summary

Ontario Public Service's Transportation Infrastructure Management Division seeks a Laboratory Supervisor to lead a team performing complex tests on engineering materials used in provincial highways.

You will supervise laboratory staff, provide technical leadership and training to junior staff, and coordinate activities while maintaining safety and quality. Certification by CSA or CCIL must be obtained within 9 months of hire.

• Strong understanding of construction technology and design methodologies.

About the job

• conduct complex and highly specialized tests on a variety of engineering materials and related products used in the construction and maintenance of provincial highways
• provide group leadership and technical supervision to laboratory staff in the area of assigned responsibility
• provide technical leadership and training to junior technical staff
• coordinate and schedule activities within the area of assigned responsibility, and monitor the accuracy, effectiveness and efficiency of work performed
• contribute to the evaluation and development of new analytical systems, test procedures and equipment, and contribute to research and development projects.

Mandatory requirements

• Certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL), as appropriate to the materials being tested, must be obtained within 9 months of employment.

Laboratory Experience

• You know theories and principles of laboratory testing procedures and methods, including knowledge of MTO, CSA, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) testing methods for construction and related materials.
• You have an understanding of construction technology and design methodologies.
• You can understand the implications of poor test results on material performance, and ensure that appropriate action is taken.
• You know laboratory health and safety practices and guidelines, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), to ensure the safe performance of work in the laboratory and in the field.

Quality Control and Diagnostic Experience

• You know laboratory quality control systems and procedures, to contribute to the development and updating of sound, effective internal laboratory quality management systems.
• You know principles of quality assurance and can use quality assurance systems to analyze and summarize performance histories.
• You have analytical and evaluative skills to contribute to selection or development of standard and alternative testing procedures.
• You have mechanical diagnostic skills to respond to pertinent equipment test data and information, such as identifying need for calibration or repair.
• You can evaluate alternative equipment or test methods.

Communication and Presentation Skills

• You can accurately prepare reports, letters and other written communications on test results.
• You can instruct and guide assigned staff, and provide training and technical direction on new and revised test methods.
• You can explain and interpret test results, and provide findings to clients.
• You can deliver training in testing of engineering materials and related products to internal and external groups.
