Job summary

WSP in Canada is seeking a seasoned Material Handling Engineer to lead design and engineering of conveyors, cranes, hoists, automated storage, and bulk material systems in mining and heavy industrial projects. You will mentor engineers, guide multidisciplinary teams, and ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance while delivering solutions across British Columbia offices.

Based in BC, you’ll translate operational requirements into detailed layouts, calculations, and technical specifications,

Qualifications

• University Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related.
• 15+ years of experience in the design and engineering of material handling systems in mining/heavy industry.
• Strong knowledge of conveyors, lifting equipment, automated systems, or bulk material handling.
• P.Eng. designation in Canada (or eligible).
• Experience solving real-world engineering challenges from equipment specification to system design and integration.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop material handling systems including conveyors, cranes, hoists, automated storage, and bulk material systems.
• Translate operational requirements into engineered solutions, layouts, and technical specifications.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate material handling solutions into broader facility and infrastructure designs.
• Support project delivery through calculations, drawings, cost estimates, and technical reports.
• Evaluate existing systems and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency, safety, and reliability.
• Participate in site visits, inspections, and commissioning activities to ensure design intent is achieved.
• Apply industry standards, codes, and best practices to deliver compliant, high-quality solutions.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to intermediate and junior engineers, supporting team growth and capability development.
• Engage directly with clients, contractors, and internal partners to solve complex technical challenges and advance project delivery.
