Job summary

Emera is seeking a Senior Manager, Technical & Corporate Accounting to lead and develop the corporate accounting function. You will assess accounting treatments for complex transactions, oversee MD&A and financial statement delivery, and drive standard-setting and policy development across a multi-jurisdictional public company.

The role requires CPA, a degree in accounting, and 5–7 years of relevant experience in financial reporting or accounting policy.

Reporting to the Emera Corporate Controller you will be a key member of the Emera Finance team. The Senior Manager, Technical & Corporate Accounting leads and manages a team of professional accountants, has responsibility for assessing the impact of new and revised accounting standards, amongst other research on complex accounting matters, and is a key contributor in the timely and accurate delivery of Emera’s MD&A and financial statements and other internal and external reporting requirements.

You are a financial thought leader and will help develop and maintain accounting policies and processes while fostering continuous improvement. You build strong collaborative relationships with business units, operating subsidiaries, external professional services firms, and the senior executive leadership team, ensuring the highest standards of service. This role is cross-functional and requires you to work closely with various business units and operations across the Emera enterprise in a variety of jurisdictions.

Key elements of the role include:

• Analyzing, reviewing, and communicating the accounting treatment related to non-routine, new or proposed transactions, and other complex accounting matters to ensure proper accounting treatment for Emera Inc. and its affiliates;
• Research, analyze and implement the effect of any new or proposed changes to accounting standards across the organization;
• Maintaining strong technical knowledge of accounting standards under USGAAP, disclosure requirements, and current industry practices to provide superior financial expertise;
• Responsible for the timely and accurate completion of quarterly and annual MD&A and financial statements in a multi-jurisdictional, publicly traded reporting environment under USGAAP;
• Provide oversight and guidance to the Corporate Accounting Team who is responsible for the monthly and quarterly reporting of companies in Emera Corporate;
• Responsible for various Audit Committee reports and presentations;
• Maintaining an effective working relationship and assisting in the management of Emera’s external auditors on financial reporting policies, technical papers, disclosures and other matters;
• Development and oversight of process improvement and efficiency projects, and coordinating with the team and impacted stakeholders to implement; and
• Ensure internal controls over financial reporting for which you are responsible to support, perform, review, or sign-off, are executed in accordance with the Company's SOX program.

As the ideal candidate, you will have a successful track record and experience in financial reporting, month-end close, and technical accounting research, as well as the strong ability to communicate technical accounting and financial information in a clear and concise manner to various stakeholders. You are an exceptional people leader with a demonstrated ability to create and promote a climate of collaboration, commitment, and accountability.

The successful candidate will be a CPA, have a post-secondary degree in a relevant field, and have at least 5 to 7 years of progressive experience in a relevant financial reporting or accounting policy function (or related experience).Other skills and capabilities include:

• Excellent understanding of accounting standards and financial reporting, as well as an ability to understand financial statements;
• Demonstrate a flexible approach in dealing with accounting issues and implementation of USGAAP, taking into account alternative treatments, different viewpoints and practical aspects of implementation;
• Experience working in or auditing a public company;
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills;
• Ability to meet deadlines and ensure disclosures are accurate;
• Strong business and financial acumen, problem solving and analytical skills;
• Proven leadership capabilities combined with exceptional interpersonal skills to help develop and maintain strong relationships and networks across the organization;
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail, while working under pressure to meet tight deadlines; and
• Well‑developed project management abilities, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing tasks for the financial reporting team.
