The Senior Manager, Compensation and Payroll is a key strategic leadership role responsible for the development, implementation and administration of all compensation and payroll programs, policies and processes. This role ensures our compensation framework is competitive, equitable and aligned with our business objectives and values. This includes executing and managing all cash compensation programs and delivering on a job evaluation framework to ensure fair internal equity and consistency. Concurrently, the role will also lead and optimize the end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance and efficiency for our multi-jurisdictional employee base across Canada.
The Senior Manager, Compensation and Payroll will lead a team of four, and report to the Senior Director, Total Rewards and Systems. The incumbent will be required to be in our Toronto, Ontario office a minimum of 4 days a week.
What you will deliver:
Compensation:
- Manage and execute on CF’s compensation philosophy, strategy, and programs, including base pay, variable pay (bonuses, incentives), long-term incentives. This includes leading the annual compensation review process (merit, profit sharing and short term incentive programs) ensuring accurate and timely execution.
- Conduct market research and benchmark analysis to ensure the organization’s compensation programs remain competitive and aligned with industry standards.
- Lead job evaluation process using Mercer IPE methodology, ensuring equitable and consistent outcomes.
- Ensure all compensation programs comply with provincial regulation such as Pay Equity and minimum wages
- Provide analytical and consultative support to all levels in the organization on initiatives and inquiries relating to compensation programs.
- Collaborate with HR Business Partners and Senior management to provide compensation expertise and support major business initiatives.
Payroll:
- Oversee the end-to end payroll processing for all employees, ensuring accuracy, compliance and timely payment
- Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, and provincial laws, regulations and reporting requirements (e.g. CRA, T4s, ROEs)
- Continuously review and optimize payroll processes, systems and controls for efficiency, accuracy and scalability. Identify and implement automation opportunities.
- Act as the escalation point for complex payroll inquiries and discrepancies ensuring timely and effective resolution
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of payroll professionals, fostering a service oriented and high performance environment
Analytics
- Support the design, build and execution of a data based actionable insights to the business.
- Oversee the quarterly and annual people metrics reporting
What your strengths are:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to express compensation and payroll concepts, terms and related information in a succinct, understandable and professional manner.
- Project management and change management skills, with track record of deliver desired results. Demonstrated continuous improvement skills.
- Highly organized with ability to prioritize multiple demands and work under pressure to meet deadlines, with minimal supervision.
- Strong people leadership skills including direction setting, coaching and development and managing performance.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationships building skills.
What you need to succeed:
- Undergraduate degree, preferably in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance or a related field
- Minimum of 8 -10 years of progressive experience in compensation and payroll, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
- CHRP, CCP, CPA designations an asset
- Experience engaging and leading teams to deliver desired business outcomes.
- Strong knowledge of job evaluation methodologies, salary surveys and compensation benchmarking
- Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll operation.
- Experience developing statistical and analytical reports an asset.
- Advanced MS Office skills or Google equivalent, compensation modeling ability and project management experience
- Ability to understand and analyze HR data using HRIS systems and other developed reports
- Strong working knowledge of compensation principles, practices and theories including job evaluation methodologies and market pricing.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, tax regulation and reporting requirements.
- Proven analytical and quantitative skills with demonstrated ability to provide high level summaries, recommendations and reports for management decision making. Strong problem solving skills with acute attention to detail.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office Excel and MS Word. Experience with HRIS and HRIS reporting and payroll. Ability to understand and analyze HR data using HRIS systems and other tools.
- High level of integrity, discretion and ability to handle confidential information.
