About the role:

This role will report to the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, and is based in Vaughan, Ontario.

JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Legal Counsel, Employment role at Martinrea is accountable for providing employment and labour advice to members of the organization across multiple jurisdictions. The successful candidate will proactively advise the General Counsel and work with employees in the employment function (including immigration, pension and privacy compliance) to assist in mitigating legal risks and managing the employment compliance function across the countries in which Martinrea operates. Other key areas of responsibility include the drafting and negotiation of legal agreements, litigation management and general advice. Counsel will report to the General Counsel and is a member of the internal legal team, but will also work directly with the Executive Vice President, Human Resources and other members of the employment team.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Act as lead employment counsel to oversee the employment function and business units across all operating jurisdictions, working with external counsel globally
  • Primary responsibilities are to ensure compliance with employment and labour laws and regulations in the various countries in which Martinrea operates, including developing, implementing, and maintaining employment policies and procedures that align with local legal requirements in all operating jurisdictions, (including privacy, immigration and pension), and monitoring regulatory developments or changes across all operating jurisdictions.
  • In addition to regulatory compliance, responsibilities include litigation management, drafting and negotiating employment contracts and templates, executive compensation, and providing proactive, responsive and sound legal advice to the General Counsel and the HR business function to assist with the mitigation of legal risk to the designated lines of business general advice.
  • Manage, oversee and work with outside counsel across all operating jurisdictions.
  • Participate, as a team member, in various projects by providing legal and regulatory advice, identifying potential legal risks, and assisting with the development of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and sustain good working relationships with designated lines of business by facilitating open communication and becoming familiar with the designated lines of business.
  • Carry out other duties as may be requested by the General Counsel.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of 8 years of employment and labour law experience (labour law experience is a plus) at a top-tier law firm or in-house at a leading company.
  • Qualified to practice law in Ontario.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario or other reciprocal Canadian province.
  • Ability to draft and implement procedures to manage regulatory risk
  • Experience with or knowledge of employment and labour laws and principles and the ability to adapt and use that knowledge to work with external counsel and help implement and manage regulatory change across the jurisdictions in which Martinrea operates.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written), excellent interpersonal and client service orientation.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Being able to work within tight timelines, fast paced environment to meet deadlines, reassessing priorities as needed.
  • Good research, problem solving and analytical skills and ability to make sound legal recommendations.
  • Team player.
