Job summary

Woodward & Co. Lawyers LLP in Victoria BC is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Assistant to support lawyers engaged in complex Aboriginal law litigation.

This role leverages your extensive litigation experience in a focused area of specialization within a dynamic, collaborative team. You’ll manage calendars, file and practice management, prepare and format documents, handle court filings, and coordinate with registries.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of work experience in litigation as a focused area of specialization.
• Post secondary (diploma, certificate, program) for paralegal or legal studies strongly preferred.
• Strong knowledge of rules of civil procedure in Ontario and other jurisdictions.
• Familiarity with litigation software and document management systems.
• Familiarity with e-discovery databases, electronic document management, electronic court registries, e-filing and e-hearing platforms.

Responsibilities

• Independently maintains and organizes calendars, correspondence, court schedules and bring-forward systems; schedules and coordinates meetings; and assists with day-to-day file and practice management.
• Edits and formats documents such as correspondence, legal memos, agreements, reports, litigation records and materials for filing in all levels of court.
• Follows court procedures for the preparation, filing and service of court documents.
• Coordinates with court registries, handles logistics and arranges for court appearances.
• Extensively uses litigation software, E-Discovery databases, and document management processes and systems to provide legal support services for complex litigation matters.

What You’ll Bring

• 6+ years of work experience in litigation as a focused area of specialization.
• Post secondary (diploma, certificate, program) for paralegal or legal studies strongly preferred.
• Strong knowledge of rules of civil procedure in Ontario (including the ability to determine rules and procedures of tribunals or courts in other jurisdictions), for the Provincial Court, Federal Court and the Supreme Court.
• Familiarity litigation software, and document management systems.
• Familiarity with e-discovery databases, electronic document management, electronic court registries, e-filing and e-hearing platforms.
• Strong problem-solving and resourcefulness using good decision making or judgement.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Advanced use and knowledge of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and Microsoft 365 application (Teams, OneNote, and OneDrive).
• Reliability, flexibility, and dependability are essential for this position.
• Experience working with Indigenous nations, communities, businesses, or organizations would be considered an asset.
